I have Prizzi's Honor, Peggy Sue got Married and The Virgin Suicides all on DVD and I knew she has a dark sexy voice, but last night that was so LOW!!!!!! I didn't expect her voice to be that low. When she was presenting I just heard the voice and thought it was a man!!!!!! It must have really gotten low these last few years......

it was so low. i really thought it was a guy, then i looked at the tv.
Yeah... it's gotten especially lower over the past couple of years. It may be in part because she is using her voice so much night after night in Virginia Woolf. She definitely had Liev beat in the masculine voice category.
Well, I used to think it was dark and sexy, but not really anymore. However, it does make for the perfect Mrs. Robbinson!!!!!!

That is why she was the perfect person to play Chandler's father on Friends!
Yeah, I just found that out last night!!!!!! I had no idea that that was her, let alone a woman!!!!!!
I just listened to Liev's voice......works well for a man!!!!!!
God, I don't think her voice is sexy AT ALL. I was terrified!
oh and I loved his acceptance speech, I don't think he thought he could win. It was charming.
I don't think it was sexy at all. Wayyy too low. She looks a lot different now too.

There is nothing sexy about a voice that has been ruined by cigarettes. It's disgusting.
it wasn't ruined by cigarettes. her voice was always low. granted, cigs will definitely add to the to the low register, but also as people age their voice naturally gets lower.
her sound was terrible.... first thing i thought was, "smoke much?"

Voices deepen with age, especially the ones that were lower than average to begin with. Some people, such as Turner, Elaine Stritch, Bea Arthur, Lauren Bacall, etc., just sped the process along due to their addictions. Turner is to be commended for the fact that she has fought to overcome hers and is, so far, winning the fight.
As far as "looking different," she's 50 years old, a fact she readily and proudly admits. As she has also publically admitted, she has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for over a decade. That involves long periods of constant pain, and a myriad of medications that alter your physical makeup - i.e., your looks.
Hey, I went to college with Kathleen. Granted it's been a few years ago :) LOL
But she always had that low voice.
My mother watched an interview in which Kathleen said that she has "trained" her voice to sound that way.
You can only "train" so much texture and quality - I could never sound like her and neither could Kristin C., with all the training in the world. I have heard her say that as well, and I believe she means "trained" it to have that sultry feel.
it did seem lower than usual. Anyone in NY see her on the red carpet on NY1 before the show? She seemed a little loopy when she was talking and kept making odd faces and rolling her eyes while taling to the interviewer.

Some medications for rheumatoid arthritis can lower/darken the voice; my mother suffered from that, and her voice ended up darker than mine, so that she was frequently mistaken for a man on the telephone. Turner's voice started out low anyhow, so perhaps the arthritis meds had a similar effect.
In any event, I thought her voice was GREAT for Martha.
