I dont know if this has been brought up, but I was just watching Glee and saw the episode of them both singing "Maybe This Time". And I thought, wow I feel like the both could pull off playing Sally Bowles in a Cabaret movie remake (if that ever happens). I know Kristen is older, but she looks pretty young. What do you guys think... here is the video.
I read this as "...as the next Little Sally?" and was very confused.

I'm thinking about legally changing my name to Lizzie Curry...
Just because a singer can sing a song from a show well doesn't necessarily mean they are able to handle the role dramatically.
Kristen has proven herself but she's more mature than what the role calls for but then again she's too mature to be playing Fran Kubelik in PROMISES, PROMISES and they cast her in the role anyway so ther you go...anything *is* possible.
As for Lea Michele she's too young and needs more experience to handle such an iconic role like Sally Bowles in CABARET.
"And why would they ever remake the "Cabaret" film?"
I think there were light rumours or something about this of the Mendes production a while ago...
They would remake it, because a new CABARET film would be more representative of the stage musical, with 'sensibilities' that probably appeal more to a modern audience. (obviously - I know you weren't literally asking for an answer)
No to Chenoweth or Lea Michele though..cringe.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I think a remake seems kinda unlikely... But to be fair, I wouldn't have thought anybody would be stupid enough to remake a classic like My Fair Lady either, and the powers that be are doing that. So what do I know?
I think Kristin Chenoweth is completely wrong for the role (and that her half of "Maybe This Time" was kinda mediocre). Lea doesn't seem ideal for the role either, but I'd rather her than Chenoweth.

There was a lot of discussion of remaking Cabaret with Renee Zellweger a few years ago. That fell apart, but I understand that it is still considered a viable property in the new "re-imagining" culture of Hollywood.
I cannot imagine, as much as I love Cheno, her as Sally Bowles. She isn't a mezzo, which Minelli is. You pull her into Sally, and you'll have a flop.
Lea Michele would be okay. She has the low and high notes, and she can belt but I mean, if you do a remake of a film, it's GOING to have to be better than the first version. Lea seems to 'pretty' for the role.
Zellwegger or Whateverthehell her last name is, she was good in Chicago but she isn't Sally Bowles material.
I'd love a mid-famous/unknown actress to portray Sally Bowles, that can ACT, SING, AND DANCE. Updated On: 12/3/09 at 05:51 PM
^ Except Sally isn't supposed to be a good singer by ANY means. That said, one could argue that the internal songs like Maybe This Time, or Perfectly Marvelous could be sung well, where Mein Herr or Cabaret wouldn't be, but still. Sally is NOT supposed to be a singer. That's why Jill Hayworth, Judi Dench, Jane Horrocks and Natasha Richardson were cast.
I think I'm one of the only people who would still like to see Zellwegger take on the new film version. She's not the best singer but as others have pointed out, she's not supposed to be. I think she's a damn fine actress when she wants to be so you could do a lot worse.
The film (besides a brilliant performance by Liza) has actually never been one of my favorites for many reasons and a re-imagining based on the revival could be brilliant and truly disturbing.
My one hope for it should it ever happen is that whoever plays Sally is a big enough star name that it would let Alan Cumming reprise the role as The Emcee, since his name alone wouldn't carry the title. Get someone like Judi Dench as Fraulein Schneider, Jake Gyllenhaal as Clifford along with whoever they put in as Sally and you've got enough star power to let him do the role.
