That review stings. I'm surprised the NY Post was interested in reviewing a replacement at this late stage of the show. Sigh. Hopefully Taye will improve his performance, so that he gets some other reviews that are positive.
And SDV manages to make a jab at Darren Criss, because of a review of Taye, in the Taye thread. Not surprising. (Unless I am misinterpreting the comment. If so, I apologize.)
Nah, no policing. Just funny coming from someone so adamant that this remain a thread about Taye and his performance. Guess it's only positivity that is frowned upon.
SDV, not long ago you were trumpeting about how Taye "redeemed" the show after it had been tainted by Darren, but I guess now it no longer has returned to the glory days? Hmmm.
The review is unfortunate. It's kind of late in his run to be hoping for this but I do hope his performance evens out more. I'm glad this week's grosses got a bit of a bump (even if a really small one) especially considering how most other shows went down.
Cascade and ChildofEarth, I agree that at least the gross amount went up, especially as cascade said, during a bad week for Broadway. I also wonder when the critic saw the show. cascade, there is still time for Taye to improve, so I don't think it's too late to hope for that (although I understand the disappointment voiced by some that he has not improved more at this point in his run).
Gawd, the overly defensive Darrenstans are amazing. I'm also bummed about the decline of the show since JCM left. Saying that really shouldn't result in this kind of instantaneous pile-on.

It's no different from the lectures doled out by people who dislike Darren anytime he is mentioned in comparison to Taye in a positive light. I agree that this is not the thread to discuss Darren, but then it works both ways. And snide comments every few pages by the same person adds nothing to the conversation.
I agree, it is distressing to see the show struggling right now. No one disputes that. I think everyone wants to see the show continue as long as possible and to be as successful as possible. But it doesn't need to be said in a way that sneaks in jabs. (Uh, I don't think you should be the one to complain about instantaneous pile-on's, based on prior comments made. Or is it only when the perceived "pile-on's" pertain to certain people posting?) But yes, ChildofEarth, I agree, let's keep on topic.
"SDV, not long ago you were trumpeting about how Taye "redeemed" the show after it had been tainted by Darren, but I guess now it no longer has returned to the glory days? Hmmm."
I was optimistic about his run, it's true. It doesn't seem like my optimism was warranted. It's super disappointing. I miss being excited by this show. I'll give Taye one more try, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to the next casting announcement.
Yes, let's keep this thread on topic. It's exhausting to see it go off topic every few pages and then people complain about it going off topic. I know I once brought up Darren in an article about Taye but when I wanted to let it go others kept going despite me ignoring them.
Anyway, it's really disappointing to see the show struggling a bit. Not just number wise but also with the frequent negative reviews (mostly fan reviews until now). We all love the show and want to see it do well.
I am curious how things will develop with Taye. I don't think his numbers will do a sudden big surge, I guess we have to accept that his grosses will hover around 400k for now. His performance might improve somewhat but we are already quite far into his run, one third of it is over.
I won't start worrying about the show in general unless they won't announce a new Hedwig within the next few weeks. If they stick to their schedule this year it might come this week.
I wish we knew, too, when the reviewer saw the show.
SDV, bringing up Darren Criss when someone wants to evaluate Taye's performance is obviously contrary to your previously stated desire to keep this topic Taye centric. I realize, SDV, that you have a strong opinion about Darren and it's not positive. In fact, I started not to respond to you specifically because I am certain you enjoy stirring that pot of negativity you feed with sarcasm and invective. You obviously know there are Darren fans here. There are also those of us who really didn't know much about him before Hedwig but that were impressed by his performance. He was good, and I don't have any problem admitting I was a convert. Why make incendiary remarks to incite people when you know they are here to discuss Taye Diggs and his portrayal of a character we all admittedly love? If you want to talk about Darren, please why don't you go to the Darren thread to comment? Just asking with all due respect.
Now as for the review, it's scalding. However, will this review really have that much of an impact? I have read some more comments this afternoon from people who really liked the performance. Maybe a better review will surface.
This might not be appropriate here (I'll be the pot or the kettle) but is anyone getting nervous that they haven't announced a new Hedwig yet? I know there were rumors that Taye was extending but I don't see that happening now...
Taye just posted photos getting a tattoo in honor of his mother and Hedwig. (not sure how the tattoo is for both, but that's his business.) Love that he did that and that Hedwig means that much to him! https://instagram.com/p/6fMs2sGd8h/?taken-by=tayediggsinsta

With Darren and Taye they announced them a month into the run of the previous Hedwig so right now, this week, would be the time for an announcement. IF they stick to this schedule that is. Maybe they need longer this time, or tomorrow we will get an announcement.
So unless we still don't have an announcement until the beginning of September or so, I won't really worry yet.
"Gawd, the overly defensive Darrenstans are amazing. I'm also bummed about the decline of the show since JCM left. Saying that really shouldn't result in this kind of instantaneous pile-on".
There's no pile-on. People are just trying to adhere to the request to talk about Taye here and Darren in the Darren thread. Anyway, what are "Darrenstans"? Explain, please.
Yes, NPH was a superstar when it came to recouping the investors' money and then bringing in profits. The show has done very well financially, according to that article that someone posted (in Barron's). Amazing2, I hope this review does not impact the numbers much. And I do see plenty of positive tweets from people who have seen the show, as well as some positive comments here. And like Amazing2, I am hopeful a positive review will be written since he still has 2/3 of his run remaining, leaving time to improve.
Isn't this the week that they should be making an announcement of the next Hedwig? So we just need to wait a little longer.

Judging by how late in the game this is, for the show and for Taye who has been in for almost a full month now, and how negative that review was, I can only assume they heard he wasn't doing to so great and though it would make for a good story/review/click bait. It's very unfortunate that he's been getting reviews and they haven't been so great. Hopefully some good can come of it and it will be the kick in the pants needed to get everything together for a strong final eight weeks.
"Oops, forgot this site is policed by the DC stans." "Gawd, the overly defensive Darrenstans are amazing. I'm also bummed about the decline of the show since JCM left. Saying that really shouldn't result in this kind of instantaneous pile-on."
This site isn't policed by "DC stans" and there is no pile-on. It's just that at this point putting him down to that degree is beating a very dead horse and people are tired of it. Over his three months in the role Darren proved himself to be at the very least a passable Hedwig, and to an even lesser point, from day 1 (and certainly by day 20) he knew his lines and choreography. If you're going to continue to put randomly bring up to put down someone who most people seem to agree was pretty great overall, be prepared for people to call you out on it. Calling people who do so "Darrenstans" is childish. I'm aware that opinion is opinion, but at a certain point it becomes clear that "opinion" is being used to validate random hate, and I will defend against that.
akmiller_98, thanks for posting the photo of the tattoo. It is touching that he did that!
HedwigInch, I don't know if at this point, it is safe to assume Taye's grosses will hover around 400K. He still has 2 more months of his run. I rather just wait and see (and hope for a steady increase).
I too wonder why they reviewed Taye and not any of the other Hedwigs since NPH. Was it triggered by the comments here and elsewhere on social media? It makes me feel sorry for Taye in a way; why should he be singled out? Of course the Post isn't the Times. But the producers can't be happy to have this come out.
I do have to wonder if it really is a basic problem of miscasting - that he can't, for whatever reason, get comfortable enough with the role so that he can really become Hedwig.
(Regarding the Idina mention - wasn't that always there? Or have they expanded/added to it for his run?)
Maybe they reviewed Taye because of him being the first black Hedwig? Maybe they thought it would spice things up more compared to the other Hedwigs before him?
Maybe I am too naive in this regard but I do hope they didn't only go to check if the bad things they've heard are accurate.
I also don't think this review will have a huge impact on his sales. Not that one review alone. I guess should more come out then maybe people who are on the fence and bother doing research will not go see him.
