"I'm definitely not knocking its potential to win awards - it doesn't even exist yet. I'm just saying... it's a tiny bit early for speculation, isn't it?"
Take that up with Revolution and their insistence that this film must be released by December.
"They're the ones who gush and kiss ass every time a castmember posts something in the tour forum. Sad thing is I don't think they even realize how ridiculous they make themselves look."
That is exactly what I was talking about, erinrebecca. I ranted about it somewhere on here earlier today. Luckily a friend of mine (timnefordanger) posted a while ago to please keep the fangirl fawning to a minimum (or at least to another thread) so not to give a bad name to sane Rentheads everywhere.
And I can back Evelyn up on the Oct-Dec Oscar thing. (And not just because I seek her approval.) It's a well-accepted fact that studios put their "prestige" pics towards the end of the year for exactly that reason. Finally subscribing to all those industry magazines has paid off!

im not disputing the oct-dec release date. all i was saying is that a movie can win awards no matter what time of year its released. i definitly agree since it takes place begining on christmas eve that it should open on christmas day to get in its one week qualifing time for award consideration. and then when i done with my family i will have a something to go do, or better yet a good excuse to leave early.LOL
In theory, you're right, a movie can win no matter when the release date is. But in reality, Oscar voters have the attention and memory span of gnats, and since it's become accepted, if not expected, that the "good" movies get released at the end of the year, I don't think they pay as close attention to the movies released in the summer and earlier.
On the other hand, a summer release date may equal a somewhat larger B.O. gross. Hmm...

Not sure of whether anyone's interested in turning this into a thread about politics, but there are articles on the Internet indicating that Rapp is very, very much opposed to the current administration.'
Well, excuse me for not being 'up-to-date'...my apologies, Mr. Rapp

"Well, excuse me for not being 'up-to-date'...my apologies, Mr. Rapp"
I'm starting to think that some of you *want* to be offended. My post could just as easily be interpreted as an effort to answer your question should it be overlooked.
A 2003 article in which Rapp discusses his views follows. ---------------------------------------- The Broadway and London West End star of Rent joins a growing list of celebrities in the US who are backing Democrat Howard Dean to defeat George W. Bush in the 2004 US Presidential election, writes OutUK correspondent Chris Cooper.
Musical star Anthony Rapp today endorsed former Vermont Governor Howard Dean for President. Rapp is best known for originating the role of Mark Cohen in the Broadway and London West End productions of the Pulitzer prize-winning rock musical Rent. He has also appeared in movies such as Dazed and Confused and the Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind. Currently, he is touring the US as the title character in the gender-bending musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Howard Dean, now the established frontrunner in the race for the Democratic nomination, first came to Rapp's attention last year when the actor emceed an event for the Empire State Pride Agenda, a gay rights lobbying organization. Dean spoke at the event explaining his experience as the first Governor to sign into law a state statute recognizing gay civil unions. Rapp said he "was completely blown away by Dean's candour, his passion, his courage, and his humanity." "He spoke so eloquently about how and why he came to sign the Civil Unions bill, and the political cost to himself and how that solidified even more his conviction that equal rights for all people are essential in America," Rapp told Out for Dean in a recent interview. Rapp, who has never before been involved with a political campaign, decided Dean was the candidate to unseat Republican President George W. Bush.
Howard Dean camnpaigning in a San Diego gay bar. "The Bush administration has consistently distorted facts, bending rhetoric to hide its true intentions," claims Rapp, "and doing so in so much secret and under some sort of presumption that Bush has a mandate to alter everything in our government." Rapp believes Howard Dean can excite disenfranchised voters more than any of the other Democratic candidates. "He is truly in touch with what makes politics alive," raves Rapp, "people doing something to better our country because they believe in it and in the ideas that created it.
"I do not agree 100 percent with all of his views. But I can't imagine being excited about any of the other candidates," he added.
Rapp believes that as more voters become aware of Dean's positions on complex issues, they will find it harder to accept the "liberal" label that many in the media have given him. "The depth and breadth of his ideas and the scope of his understanding is what will be appealing to a broad diversity of voters," says Rapp. "America will probably be more than a little surprised that it's possible to be blown away by the power of a politician once again."
Rapp will be joining a number of gay and lesbian celebrities co-hosting National Coming Out Day house parties for Dean in cities across America on October 11th. Out for Dean is spearheading the project as an effort to raise the visibility of LGBT voters and support a candidate it says will fight for their equality.

I haven't said anything at all regarding the RENT movie, but I suppose now's a good a time as ever. Let me first say that when I read Anthony's first post, I got all tingly inside. I'm not intending to go all fan girl on you dear, but I'm a HUGE fan of everything you do. And you're adorable to boot! So the fact that you're taking time out of your busy schedule to answer our crazy question makes me love and respect you even more. But I digress! In terms of the RENT film, I'm scared. It's not that I don't trust Columbus. RENT is my baby and I don't want to see it changed so much that I can't love it anymore. Anthony, when you say that you guys are comfortable with the script as it is currently, that gives me a glimmer of hope. I don't care who's in the cast (though it would be nice to have you, Jesse, Adam, Jai and Idina because a girl can dream!), but it better be damn good!
So thanks again Anthony, and I hope you stick around with us!
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

Sorry to hog my own thread (no, not really sorry), but does this "conditional love" remind anyone else of the attitude that homophobic parents have toward their gay children? LOL. Even the baby metaphor is there!
Everyone feels that RENT is their show, that's why it is special. It hit home with a lot of people, and I count myself among them.
Wish I hadn't missed this discussion tonight- I do hope that Anthony will post again. If so, Anthony, I have a question- do many actors read boards such as broadwayworld?
Not at all Evelyn. I agree with what Insomniak said. Everyone has at least one small part of RENT inside them, and that *is* what makes it so special. RENT has a HUGE place in my heart, and I feel that if that was that was taken away from me by way of extreme changes, I'd raise hell. Sorry to sound crazy, but this is a subject that matters a lot to me!

Watching you, or perhaps I should say, experiencing you in Hedwig was amazing. I do think though that some of the long time members of Hartford Stage have not quite recovered. I don't remember how many times I went to see it, 4 I think. One was a first date..we never did have a second one :)

It's been interesting to see the controversies that have been swirling around... Again, I didn't intend to create any more of them by entering this world.
I'm not sure what questions I haven't answered yet. Can someone remind me of them?
Oh, yeah, since Dean is no longer in the race, I am vehemently supporting Kerry, and not just because I'm so anti-Bush; I've actually grown to reall admire the man.
Everyone -- VOTE!!! Especially if you live in Colorado or Oregon or Iowa or Minnesota or New Hampshire or Pennsylvania or Florida etc etc
Ways to annoy people:
Arrive at a meeting late, say you're sorry, but you didn't have time for lunch, and you're going to be nibbling during the meeting. Then eat raw potatoes.
Ask people what gender they are,or
Disagree strongly with everything anybody says:)
Do many actors read boards like broadwayworld? Do you?
ETA- If I was old enough, I would vote Kerry in a second. I can't stand behind a man who wants to do what Bush plans to.

If I was American, I'd vote Kerry too. Now all I can do is urge my American friends and relatives to vote Kerry instead.
I remember reading a few reviews of Nocturne a long time ago. I vaguely remember it as being a one-man show...what was it about? Will you be reprising the role any time soon?

I already read and posted at the other thread. Sorry.
I can't speak for any other actors, but I imagine some of them read this stuff, and some don't. I just never wanted to feel separate from the people who come to see my work, you know?
Nocturne is a play my brother Adam wrote that I did in Berkeley right after September 11th 2001. It's an incredibly powerful one-man play about a young man who accidentally kills his little sister in a car accident, then spends years in isolation as he fails to come to terms with it. Until finally the ice starts to melt...
It's a beautiful read, if you want to pick up a copy. I am a huge fan of my brother's work, and not just because he's my brother. He has several novels that have been published as well, and a couple of other plays that are out there in collections.
Is it widely available? I love reading/watching one-person shows. (Did you see Fully Committed when Adam and Jesse were producting it?) How long did you do Nocturne for?

Happy to be a shill, when it's something I believe in.
Nocturne is fairly widely available, I think. Certainly via amazon.com, etc.
I actually was one of the investors in Fully Committed. I was a big fan, and very happy to be a part of it.
the Nocturne run was only about a month and a half long, if I remember correctly. I really enjoyed being in Berkeley, and we were well-received. It's a pretty intense play, and one night we had to stop the show because someone collapsed from the stress of watching it.
