Not even if it brings huge crowds and gives the show a huge $$ boost. Maybe that might light a fire on some of the producer's butts to get working on things. With making it more popular, couldn't it mkae competition for the roles harder?
anyone?

I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!
I have to step up here (why am I still on this thread???) and say a word about Daphne Rubin-Vega. Those of you judging her performance solely by the OCR have no idea how scintillating her performance was. She was hot as hell and I could completely buy her as a junkie. It was, imho, THE performance of the show which was populated by nothing less than extraordinary performers.
"I'm so looking forward to a time when all the Reagan Democrats are dead."
I agree with robbiej about Daphne. She WAS Mimi on stage. Though I have seen a few good Mimis, none could match her balance of blazing sexual heat and poignant depression. Her Out Tonight was worthy of every ovation it consistently received (which has now become simply obligatory and insincere). It was exciting, dangerous, and sexy. I could truly sympathize with the character and wanted the best for her. In the case of Mel B, well, Mimi seemed to be more of a high-maintenance annoyance than anything else. Seeing the original cast of Rent is the only Broadway experience I truly wish I could go back and relive again. As robbiej said, and for lack of better words, it was special. And that's an understatement.

Mister Matt, I couldn't agree more.. RENT opened when I was 12 years old. I saw the originals MANY MANY times and as they all started to depart, the entire newness just went away. Something so special turned into a TRL show. With each new cast, each generation thought that certain cast was god..but if nobody got to see the OBC they really don't know how good we had it.
I regret not being into the show when it opened, with the OBC. I am a fairly new fan (5 years), and at 22 years old, Rent for me is still one of the more poingiant shows I have ever seen.
And I can agree, there have been casts in those 5 years that have been absolutely terrible (Ryan Link for one, and Manley Pope also I found didn't grip Roger's Character Well...to name a few)
But I still stand by the current cast. And aside from some iffy celebrity casting (I'm curious why of all people Mel B was chosen) and currently Drew Lachey, who isnt terrible, but needs to work on some things the cast is pretty solid. (And I wont dive in to defend Matt Caplan anymore, because sometimes its just impossible in a certain thread)
I am really looking forward to seeing Antoinique Smith in the movie. I've heard so many positive things about her, so as of now, shes really the only one I'm excited to see. I am also secretly hoping they give the character to Anthony Rapp, but for some reason I don't see him taking the role. Don't know why.

i pray he does because I really would hate to see Justin Timberlake in the role "hey man i have a camera man ... look into it dude" then during "what you own", he'd start to beatbox.
It occurred to me today, after remembering Natalie Wood's dubbing scene in "Inside Daisy Clover" over on the other board, that what I would most like to see in this film is live singing. As I'm sure most of you know, the standard method for dealing with singing in a movie is to prerecord it, then have the performer lip-synch to the recording during filming. It's just easier on so many levels, but, as I'm also sure most of you have noticed, it takes away from the performance. And in Rent especially, I'm afraid, could have a lethal deadening effect.
I don't know if it's even feasible for Chris Columbus to consider this approach. It's harder technically, and if more than a few takes are required, obviously causes a lot of wear and tear on the performers. But I sure hope this is the way they go.
VivaBohemia you said the current cast. I wasn't aware that a cast had been chosen, that included Drew Lachey and Mel B. Personally I am against getting the former boy/girl band members. I think there are more talented people out there that could bring in as much money with their talent alone but aren't big names. I actually like the idea of having many of the original cast members in the film. I know that they are all older than they were 7 years ago but, I mean, don't they normally cast way older than the characters are. The original cast was amazing and for me made the show what it is...well that and the music and the story...and Jonathan Larson!! But you get my point.
What is your dream role?
My dream role would be to be myself. To be performing at the Hollywood Bowl and to have an audience there just to see me, as Stephanie. They are there because they like what I do as a singer, an artist and a person (the last being the most important). I enjoy escaping and portraying other characters, but to be accepted and wanted as yourself... that's amazing! --Stephanie J. Block
Just one of the many reasons I admire and respect Stephanie!!
GretchaSketch, a cast hasn't been chosen for sure yet. And I think Drew and Mel B have been ruled out. (Unless I'm totally misunderstanding what you're saying. Then you can tell me to shut up.)

Bumping this up because recently, a very reliable source (think: current cast member) posted on Compulsive Bowlers that "a little bird" told him that these people have all said "yes" to the Rent movie - Idina, Taye, Adam, Jesse, and Anthony.
Can the person who knows Adam Pascal (sorry, the name slips me) confirm/deny this?

And to think you thought that my speculation on the possibility of Idina doing the RENT movie instead of Wicked in T.O. was "WISHFUL THINKING"??? Bwayguy, I'm surprised at you! (And somewhat offended.)
