Rolling Stone makes an interesting and very true point here:
"The Broadway Veterans Ruled
It happened to Julie Andrews herself back in 1964: The accomplished stage actress is thrown over for the leading role in the film version of My Fair Lady (which she created on Broadway) in favor of Hollywood royalty Audrey Hepburn. Star power sells, and that's why Carrie Underwood was cast as Maria while seasoned Broadway pros (and Tony Award winners) Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle were relegated to supporting roles."
Clint Eastwood and other people decided not to take that route with the 'Jersey Boys' film, which will be refreshing. Rob Marshall and other people also made great casting choices for 'Into the Woods', especially with James Corden, Lila Crawford, Billy Magnusen, and Daniel Huttlestone.
The Best and Worst Moments of the New 'Sound of Music'

"Okay, we all know that Angela Lansbury should have starred in the 1974 movie version of the musical Mame, a show for which she won a Tony Award on Broadway.
But the role went to our beloved Lucille Ball who by then was in her early 60s and never had much of a singing voice (although it was not as bad as Lucy Ricardo’s!).
In light of last night’s much-maligned but highly-rated live presentation of The Sound of Music on NBC, I wonder if it is better to have a great actress who isn’t much of a singer headline a musical or a great singer (like Carrie Underwood) who isn’t much of an actress do so."

The Maimed role went to Lucy because she bought the rights. Lucy's dream was to always be a musical comedy star (see Wildcat) but she really didn't have the voice.

Myles Von Trapp, Maria's great grandson, wished it was Anne Hathaway who played Maria.

Everyone hates Anne Hathaway though....I don't know why but she got tons of hate during last year's award season. Her singing isn't strong enough anyway. I thought Kelli O'Hara would have been magical.
Myles was 2 when Marie died, how would he know what she would think? Did he ever even meet her?
Did he talk to her thru the Long Island Medium ?
Hahahahaaaa. God I want to shave that hair helmet off that woman!!!
Good point, Sue.

Here is a new interview with Laura. She said that she would if NBC had anything else like this planned she would love to play Eliza Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady', but she does not think it will happen. She thinks maybe 'Peter Pan' and 'Cinderella' could be next since they are great draws for families and 'White Christmas' would be a great idea.

I kept thinking 'couldn't they get Patrick Wilson for the Captain?' oh well..
In the party scene, Laura Benanti enters and the guy behind her steps on her dress, but she just has an oops moment and continues on--what a pro!
Here's the NY Times review which, for what it's worth, I think hits the nail on the head: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/07/arts/television/carrie-underwood-stars-in-nbcs-live-sound-of-music.html?_r=1&
And Metacritic is aggregating a bunch of reviews. Currently it's at a 53% on a 1-100 scale: http://www.metacritic.com/tv/the-sound-of-music-live!/critic-reviews

"Everyone hates Anne Hathaway though...."
No. Just you.
I thought it was a mixed bag, but mostly entertaining, and I think it was a nice try by Underwood, but ultimately she's more of a singer than an actress. Here's my review:
The Sound of Music Live: So What Did I Think?
So am I being overly bitchy and snarky when I say - with due respect to those who feel differently - that Carrie Underwood's acting is perhaps the worst I have ever seen in a professional performance? Or can you accept that I honestly feel that way and feel truly embarrassed for her?
"No, just you"
Wow. You are so ridiculous. Are you.....15?
My original quote:
"Everyone hates Anne Hathaway though....I don't know why but she got tons of hate during last year's award season."
If you had finished my statement, you would read "I don't know why". Reading: It's kind of a big deal.
You are so hilariously amusing.

Theatre is subjective... Everyone will have a different opinion of the same performance.
"Wow. You are so ridiculous. Are you.....5? "
Considering I've been posting here for almost 10 years, no.
You aren't very good at math, either.
Henrik I would say Madonna in Evta way way worse.
Especially considering she had a lot longer to rehearse and was not live... and infinte number of takes.
Plus she can't hold Carries candle when it comes to singing.
Sue, you were absolutely right about this person.
TD, congratulations on being old. In the future, don't comment on half a statement to make yourself look cool.

And congratulations on looking like a total tool.
That woman who played Maria was an utter embarrassment. Clearly she has not spent ONE MOMENT payin her dues. In sweat.
Any chorus girl picked from any Broadway theater could have done a better job. And lets not even get in to that vampire guy. SHAME ON THE TWO OF THEM!
Television needs to learn you can't just throw somes names on and expect them to be good for three hours. You need people whove been properly trained on Broadway, baby!
I don't agree that ONLY b'way trained actors could have done this. The problem with Underwood is simply she has no TALENT as an actress. Moyer? Well, while I didn't love him, I really didn't hate him either.
As to the Laura Benanti comment to "the haters" -- ridiculous. (And isn't she guilty of a similar negativity BEFORE she was involved?) Liking someone personally has nothing to do with the quality of their work.
It's not personal, it's business.

So much of the "professional" criticism of the broadcast is just so much rubbish. No, as an actress, Carrie Underwood is not Helen Hayes, not Julie Harris, not Mary Martin, not Julie Andrews. She is also not a trained actress, which makes the character she was able to create and the performance she gave --warm, moving, and real --- all the more commendable. Nitpicking about sets, choreography, sound, the NBC logo? Get real.
What it all really boils down to is that the cadre of "professional" critical naysayers probably hate the show itself, gag at having to refer to it as a classic, and most importantly, can't abide those who love shows like The Sound of Music, and are enraged that such people were actually given something they love.
In light of the recent discussion going on around the internet of "snark" versus "smarm," I invite everyone to identify examples of each in this thread! (hint: everything AfterEight posts is smarm).
You guys, if you're going to rewatch it like I am you must include Liesls live commentary. ... it will have you in stiches!!
