Another consideration for a future musical is that it has to be a musical that can easily break for commercials. We'll never see A Chorus Line because that show wasn't designed to break.

Where can I watch the Show again online? I'm from Europe so SOM was kinda late in the night yesterday and I couldn´t watch the whole Show. Thank you in advance!
Overall I felt the show was enjoyable, live musical theater in prime time is always a good thing.
Carrie Underwood seemed to get more comfortable as the night went on, although her acting was occasionally non-existant. Stephen Moyer, on the other hand seemed to be struggling to act with his natural accent, he isn't that stiff on True Blood. On the subject of accents, those were the least german sounding Nazi's EVER.
Audra and Laura stole the show, as was to be expected, however I thought the real standout was Ariane Rinehart, who is both beautiful and well sung. Although I did think it was a misstep of the costuming to put Liesl in heels (she was taller than Carrie already).
Overall this was a win for NBC, even if the most prominent commercials outside Walmart were for Disney movies. I hope they tackle other shows in the future.
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
I just read Marc's post and I agree with everything he said. My professional theatre friends took to Facebook immediately trashing the production, and how disheartening to see their comments. I had minor quibbles, but that didn't affect my overall enjoyment of The Sound of Music last night. My favorite scene of the evening was Audra's rendition of Climb Every Mountain and Carrie's genuine reactions throughout that number.

We were rocketed through some prolific loop-de-loops just two bars into Audra MacDonald's rendition of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" as Mother Abbess. If you didn't shed a tear during that epic performance, you might be an Underwood. I mean a robot. Heck, even Underwood was full-on ugly crying during the performance, likely betraying the inner monologue: "Audra MacDonald is belting this song in my ear and I will never find such happiness again." Daily Beast Snark
What nobody seems to mention is how badly staged this show was. One of my favorite songs is "How Can Love Survive?" and it became a song about shuffling teacups around the lanai.
When Audra started into one of the theater canon's most thrilling songs, she was staged to turn her back and walk upstage away from the camera.
The running up and down the staris of Do-Re-Mi was also tiresome and had Carrie wondering if she should have thought about LaMaze breathing class.
The staging of this was really atrocious.

Woah! Major overnight ratings. 10.9 overall - and bested Big Bang Theory as well.
"Three hours in length, NBC’s broadcast opened with a 10.9 at 8PM and peaked with an 11.5 metered market number in the 8:30PM slot. It drew an 11.3 at 9PM, an 11.2 at 9:30PM, a 10.5 at 10PM and a 10.0 at 10:30PM." Inconceivable!
Those ratings are big, but I was actually expecting bigger numbers. This was the only thing people were talking about last night.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
So happy about these ratings! Chalk up a win for the good guys!
For over forty years now, the malign and malefic media have been trying to brainwash us into preferring ugliness to beauty, nastiness to goodness, misery to joy, and in their arrogance, have expected all of us dodos to swallow it hook, line, and sinker. Well, despite all their efforts, we haven't, as was proven last night. Now they can all gnash their teeth down to the gum line.

Those are some gigantic numbers! I'm having a feeling NBC will make a live musical special an annual event with numbers like that.
Also wondering if anyone has been able to find the complete version online, I only caught the second half and have only been able to find snippets online.

The next live production should be Reba in Hello, Dolly. She'd sing the crap out of that score, and draw huge ratings. She was amazing in the staged reading of South Pacific. Give Benanti more work, cast her as Irene.

I don't think anyone understands how big last night really was.
IT WAS LIVE MUSICAL THEATRE ON TV!!!!
And I, for one, was thrilled that it happened.
The only thing wrong with it was that it was sponsored by Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart is the reason the holiday shopping is now like going into a war zone.
Fcuk Wal-Mart.

Can't one be thrilled about live musical theater on tv happening and still express, if, like myself, one believes it to be the case, that the show was horrible and that Carrie Underwood's performance was embarrassingly bad?
Or must one pretend to be enjoying something just because it is seen as good for the world of musical theater?
Frankly, I'm not sure that this was good for musical theater. If I was a person who hadn't been exposed to musical theater before and saw last night's performance, I might never want to see another musical in my life.
Without WALMART this wouldnt have been possible. I dont see Apple or Starbucks supporting live theater

. Why are you assuming anyone is pretending to like it? Can't you try to believe that many viewers REALLY liked it?
I recognized a few flaws, but overall I enjoyed it thoroughly. there was more than enough positives in it to completely overcome the negatives. The chills I got from Audra's singing, and all the other nuns, plus enjoying Laura Benanti, and finally loving how it was LIVE TV, which brought me back to the days of early tv when so much was live, I loved it!
"Taylor Swift in Grease or Oklahoma is a natural!"
Grease would never pass the censor test for network tv. It's too dirty for prime time. It would either have to be heavily censored/lyrics rewritten or have to go to one of the cable channels.
