Your maniacal crusade to label people as racist infuriates me, so I spent some time in introspection. Investigating why something makes you angry is enlightening.
We’ve entered a social chapter where words like racist and pedophile are used insincerely and you’re guilty of it. Your passion may be real, but your goal is not what you’re hoping people will mistake to be. It’s vile.
Caring about mistreatment based on race is inarguably a positive thing. Using the word ‘racist’ to wrest cheappower over others (see: The Crucible) is ethically corrupt – and it’s what you’re doing.
Patti wasn’t being racist – she crossed the line from salty to tacky and if she didn’t know it she wouldn’t have apologized. The accusation of sublimated racism made by Ms. Lewis is likely what set her off – and I don’t blame her for that. I blame people with your self-serving, wickedly casual misuse of that potentially fatal label. The fatality of it is what turns you on. You’re like a child with a gun. I hope there’s nothing micro about the aggression I mean to convey about what you’re spewing here. It’s poisonous to the very thing you hope to be seen as advocating for.
To evoke that other open letter, WE SEE YOU – but not as the crusader you fancy yourself to be - rather, as a selfish, petulant charlatan doing real harm to important progress. "
Here is what you all don’t seem to understand. I’m not looking for allies on a BWW thread. Nothing I say was ever going to convince you, and truthfully it is not my job to educate you. It is my job to defend a Black woman who Ms. Lupone attempted to discredit - as many of you continue to do at every angle.
The word racist triggers the Karen in a lot of you on this board. You only can acknowledge racism when someone has been murdered. You don’t walk around this world or industry in a skin that lessens your chances at a job. Kecia does. Patti doesn’t. There’s a built in privilege in that. Not blaming Patti, but that’s the reality there.
Racism is a spectrum, and whether Patti intended to or not, her actions fell very much within the lines of a micro aggressive history towards POC. Acknowledging that was all the community was asking. But the lack of ability to take blame led us here. It took an uproar. I’ll admit when I’m wrong. My intentions don’t always match my actions and when I care I have to apologize.
Patti could’ve long ago but waltzed on by and ignored Kecia’s public call in. The privilege is to brush that off and then talk smack about Kecia. Patti Lupone is not a raging racist, but her actions have made her appear to be and that’s the issue at hand.
