I think that Idina in See What I wanna See brings her back from being overrated.
THANK YOU :) thats exactly why I said, she's only overrated in how certain people THINK of her, not that her talent doesn't live up to the hype. Because, especially out of wicked, I truly believe it does. And SWIWS was the perfect example of that. SWIWS was a very different caliber of show, with a higher caliber of talent I think, and she definitely, definitely fit right in with the rest of the incredible cast.
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.
^oh me too, me too seriously, she's what MAKES me interested in wicked. She practically IS that show for me. Its just... I think that in reality shes actually even BETTER than that. And I think people think of her as overrated simply because they believe wicked itself is overrated. So I was just commenting on that, ESPECIALLY outside of wicked, her talent really does live up to the hype :) but yeah, she's absolutely brilliant in wicked imo.

How underrated for overrated I think is only a reflection of the response of a person's fans (or lack thereof) so you can't say "She's only overrated because of her fans" because that's all overrated or underrated means, how much a person's talents matches the amount of fans or praise they get.
Idina would have to be the most remarkable thing to hit live theatre since Sondheim to live up to her hype.
Theatre is a safe place to do the unsafe things that need to be done.

^ok, I see you're point actually so she is overrated. But again, that doesn't mean she's NOT talented. I guess that was just what I was trying to get at. Its not a negative thing, it just means her fanbase hypes her up a bit too much

This thread makes me so angry. First of all- Noone here has the right to claim any one person overrated or underrated-it's sheer opinion. That being said, one is even less capable of judging preformers based on the number of shows they have done. Chita-a legend, of course; but would she be less incredible if she hadnt done as many shows as she has? Of course not. And for that matter, some incredible preformers with fewer roles on Broadway could be deemed underrated for not being cast in more parts.
Becoz_i_knew_you21-I agree with much of what you said on this thread, however, I don't understand why the initial list should be related to the inexperience of the poster. I mean, what's with all the wicked bashing? I'm not really trying to defend it, but it is your username... Elphaba3-AMY SPANGER OVERRATED?! WHAAAT? please explain.
And finally; just because a preformer has a loyal fan base doesnt make them ovverrated. (Idina)
*laughs* i would just like to point out to the person who started this thread that all of the names you have mentioned are talented performers. Why the hell else would they be on broadway. And i'm sure you own all of the cds or have paid to see them perform.
I think a more appropriate thread would be discussing the performers who are underated.
and why the HELL are legends like Streistand and Chita being brought up. I would guess that 95% of the performers on broadway right now bow to them.
CHITA RIVERA...OVERRATED? She can dance the hell out of any part and do it a lot better than any 22 year old and acts and sings wonderfully. She is a living legend.
Zeitoujo, I respectfully dissagree with just about all of your over-rated choices, especially with Sutton Foster, she has the prettiest voice I ever heard, a true triple if ever there was one and then some (she's also quite an acrobat and a graphic artist).
I don't like to think of any performers as over-rated, but some highly praised stars just don't appeal to me personally. Ethel Merman and Elaine Strich, to name a couple.
Under-rated: Maureen Moore, Jennifer Hope Wills, Rachelle Rak, Jessica Grove, Leslie Kritzer, Kevin Cahoon, Troy Britton Johnson, Chritian Borle.
RACHEL YORK IS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. She is amazing.
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
Stephanie J. Block, OVERRATED??? lol! That kinda makes me laugh cause she really isn't!
Erin Dilly is totally underrated. And I mean underrated by theatre goers I guess. She is an amazing performer, and has received a tony nom but has about 2 fans. And she really needs a GOOD leading role in a GOOD show!!!!

Why do people always got to bring Menzel down...? Is it jealousy, of her success or the fact wicked is fast become a global phenomenon? or the scary fact she's becoming some what of a contempary icon in her time? either way there's no denying the sheer talent and unbelievable abilities of this incrediable woman. And yes sadly Rachel York in sooo underated, that woemn is so ridiculously versatile and that voice is gorgeous!
