Saw the afternoon performance today.
Yes - the laughs come fast and furious like OH, MARY. However, the fundamental difference here is that OH, MARY has a a distinct premise and actively elevates that premise to the point where it is both absolutely absurd, but also creates a character worth rooting for.
MESSY WHITE GAYS…does not have that. Drew Droege definitely could make you laugh until you cramp, but it’s all ultimately empty calories after spending 80 minutes with some of the most unsavory people who, if the comic ball drops at any moment, game over. The characters are such broadly drawn gay stereotypes of the modern era that there are, in equal measure, enough moments that made me cringe. It never feels like Droege and cast are trying to satirize these archetypes so much as they are actually inhabiting them.
It’s truly a mixed bag. You can go and have a blast if you are looking for something absolutely brainless and farcical, but even a few hours after, I’m having a hangover-type feeling from how slapdash the play itself feels.

‘Messy White Gays’ Review: A Satire We’ve Seen Before

Quite bummed that I don't think I'm going to be in town to see this. I've never had the opportunity to see a first reading of a show and then what became of it. Curious, with the varied reviews, whether the 'people really want to laugh' element will propel it forward. I hope so - I laughed my ass off and I've been a Drew Droege fan since his Chloe videos. (If you haven't seen them, launch YouTube right now!)

Caught this a few days ago. if this is where gay theatre is going shut it down now.
If you are expecting Boys in the Band or even Party.. which is great fun....look elsewhere. The playwright does gays no favor in portraying them/us this way.
A huge embarrassment and a waste of time and money. Could not wait for the end and I did not laugh once at the in "hells kitchen jokes. It was a very long 80 minutes.
The actors were delightful and worked hard and the set while spectacular did not make any sense for a Hell's Kitchen apartment. Bad writing. Bad jokes. Bad theatre.
Worst thing I saw all week. One of the worst plays I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Well produced however. A well produced piece of dreck.
Goldenboy: what else have you seen this week? If this was the worst, what was the best? Did you see Chess or Ragtime?
I don’t agree that it was one of the WORST things I’ve ever seen, but yeah, I hated this as well. Just absolutely obnoxious.
I love good gay theatre. This is nothing like good gay theatre. In spite of a very likable cast, I found this show incredibly dull and unfunny. The characters were gays at their worst which I suppose is the point (Messy White Gays) but all they did was snort cocaine, have sex and be bitchy. Oh and hide bodies in furniture.
If you are expecting Boys in the Band or even Party, you will be terribly disappointed. This is not written by a comedic talent. This show does gays no favor whatsoever. I did not laugh once. Unfunny jokes. Horrible premise and in quips about Hell's Kitchen. It was written for friends of the author who must live in Hell's Kitche.
One of the most miserable evenings of theatre I've ever spent. I had a better time watching Two and Half Men or Will and Grace than this dreck.
The set is gorgeous but it doesn't make any sense. These people are supposed to be 57th and Broadway. They would never have a Central Park View. They could not afford that view.
It is a very well produced messy piece of theatre. Worse than Queen of Versailles
To answer someone's question, this is what I saw this week.
Gotta Dance (American Dance Machine) - Best thing I saw all week.
Queen of Versailles
& Juiliet
The Bakers Wife
$ Juliet
Marjorie Prime
I saw Chess in London years ago, so I had no desire to revisit it.
I saw the original Ragtime and I have some desire to revisit it but haven't
And some real good money was spent on the production too. I yearn for the days of the Rudnick and McNally gay plays, and the Crabtree's revues. I could not wait for this to be over and was very appreciative of it's one act length. Saw Prince Faggot the same weekend, the other end of the spectrum. One may have been too smart while the other couldn't have been dumb.. Back to my first line in this post - who sank a boatload of cash into this?
The boatload of cash appears to have come primarily from The Fabulous Invalid Pro.Co. (and podcast) and the D’Angora’s (the new owners of the Laurie Beechman/WBC)
Is it flopping? Otherwise, I don't get the "who put so much money into this?" question.

I saw this yesterday, it starts out rough but by the end I thought it was a blast. Would I see it again, no. Is the plot pretty thin, yes. But sometimes it is fun to just watch people call each other names for 80 minutes and watch crazy stuff happen.
Also I thought Pete Zias was a real discovery, super funny.

According to the BWW profile article, newbie investor Sean Nyberg has money in the show.
