What do you think the most under-rated movie musical is? I'd have to say "Gepetto", which was a TV Stephen Shwartz musical, a lot better than Wicked (though that really isn't saying much, is it?
There was no need for that...
Hello Dolly with Micheal Crawford and Barbara Streisand

Newsies definately Newsies!!
I'd have to agree about HELLO DOLLY. It get's trashed all the time. Over the years I've grown a bit fond of it.
Newsies minus Christain Bale and Bill Pullman.
The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (Michel Legrand)why don't more people know about this 1960's gem.
I've never really understood why Hello Dolly gets such a trashing, I really liked it...its catchy, and it showed me a more interesting side of Barbra Streisand. It's amazing to me that Victor/Victoria never gets a mention in the "BEST MOVIE MUSICAL" posts, because that is one of my all-time favourites. But the favourite DVD's i like to watch of musicals are of the OBD, like Bernadette in SITPWG...i wish there were more of these recordings
I never understood the Newsies obsession. I never have liked this musical. Hated it as a child. Revisited it last year when half the people in my department wouldn't shut up about it and I still think it's crap. The score is bland and for the life of me I can't remember what the story was, so obviously the book was forgetable.
Also I can understand the Hello Dolly movie bashing. I like the show but correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Dolly supposed to be Irish and not Jewish. And who ever tried to pass off that Chipmunk as Crawford....oh wait it was Crawford. Yeah he's still talentless and overrated.
But since the topic is underrated and I have done enough bashing as is. I like The Slipper and The Rose. Interesting score and interesting point of view on the Cinderella story, give it a watch.
Has anyone besides me seen Gepetto?
Gepetto- I think I saw that! I really liked that!
I would say HAIR and EVITA. I loved both so much!
HAIR is a true classic.

Alterego wins with CHERBOURG.
UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG is a true classic with a glorious score, not nearly as well-known today as it should be.
I dare anyone to watch it and not shed a tear.

I gotta admit, I always liked Calamity Jane. Maybe it was because Doris Day is jus so darn cute even when she tries to be butch. Or because you can't beat Howard Keel even if he is sans moustache. I had songs from that movie stuck in my head for weeks after I saw it on TBS for the first time. And I hear they're making it into a stage show now which is pretty cool.
"Take me back to the windy city, the windy city is mighty purty, but they ain't got what we got! I'm telling ya boys! I wouldn't trade this golden nugget for the whole of Illinois!!"
EVITA
Definitely EVITA. It was the first real movie musical of the 90s and the first to use really high tech contemorary editing and art direction for a movie musical. It's the only real "music video" movie musical. It's just a beautiful movie.
Mack the Knife has some great moments.
Newies' dance number and certain choruses should fondly be remembered.
All That Jazz should be on every movie critic's Top 10 list!
