I actually started to hate those shows/performers MORE because of the fans. They're ignorant, narrow minded, pompous and just completely emotionally retarded in general. Anyone else feels that way?

Patti LuPone is so good you can tune out the fans that think they own her. I've had many a good night at a Patti performance and oftentimes that older fans were very entertaining.
I do understand how annoying it can be - if you're at an event with the performers they often make their presence extremely well known, claim they're friends with the actors, and go out of their way to make you feel like a peon if you're trying to get an autograph or a photo. It's very stalkerish and scary.
I love Patti LuPone, much the same as I do Sondheim- I'm simply willing to admit that they can not walk across water, and that everything they do is not gold.
Fans should never distract you from forming you own opinion about a show/performer- you can block them out!
^ Totally agree. It's not the actor or the show's fault. It's understandable to be annoyed by the presence of these individuals but you should try to find a way around it. If I smacked every single annoying fanperson I've ever encountered I'd be in jail now.
The only ones that bothered me to any degree were the Wicked fans, especially during the run of the original cast. The candlelight vigil for Idina was ridiculous.
And Rent fans when they started taking over and pretending the performances were just for them.

I will admit that some fans make it difficult to just like someone, feels like we're obliged to be 100% behind everything a performer does, or we're not welcome. Seems to mimic the politics of the day. In particular, I'm referring to the fans of Cheno and Esparza, though there are certainly others.

What's funny is I've remembered certain fanpersons from many shows who were such pains in the ass and got every autograph on everything they could, then I saw the items on Ebay a few weeks later.
Aw, c'mon! Elena fans are passionate, but at least they're not consisting of 13 year old fangirls and their gay best friends ala Idina Menzel or 70 year old STD-ridden geriatric queens ala Patti LuPone.
I have to say, the fanboys I hate the MOST are those 20+ year old metrosexual queens with **** eating grins who perform in clicky community theater troops and think they know all there is to know about musical theatre just because they DVR "Glee," saw "Wicked" on tour, and played the HIV tranny in a local community theatre production of "Rent" set to canned music. THAT'S the type I hate the most.

A bit harsh re the Patti fanpeople! I've met a lot of nice Patti fanatics.
There are Elena fanatics who are way older than 13 (as are the gay best friends). I've seen them and I'm frightened, Auntie Em. Thank goodness they're in the minority.
The most obnoxious and delusional musical fans are the ones who make posts like this. :)

I love Sondheim, but let's be honest, his fans have a tendency to be blowhards and pretentious twits who think they know everything. Unfortunately, they can't accept the fact that Stephen Sondheim is just an entertainer and not the Messiah. If you don't believe me, spend a few minutes over at Finishing the Chat.
I am a Patti LuPone fan (obviously), and honestly, the reason many are so rabid about her is because people who dislike her are damned pompous and purposely say stuff just to hurt people's feelings. It's very childish.
But who cares? Patti still has two Tonys and is one of Broadway's biggest stars of all time. So whatever crap people have to say about her, it probably stings them that she's still so incredibly successful, since she's not young anymore but still showing no signs of ending her career, and she's a huge star in a time in the theatre when Broadway is not churning out big names anymore. The woman has made it, and that bothers a lot of stupid people. I'm not a fan of Bernadette Peters but I would never say she "can't sing" or other garbage like that which will be said about Patti LuPone by people who dislike her.
"Exactly. Unless they are disturbing the performance in some way or "stalking" a performer, leave them alone to enjoy what they want."
Yeah, but that way this troll doesn't get to use words like "retarded", "queen", "fag", "tranny" and other hate-filled words that pepper this poster's posts and garner him attention.
This thread is leaps and bounds more obnoxious than any fangirl/boy. At least they love something. OP seems to do a lot of hating.
I should also add that the "Ozalots" during the days of The Boy From Oz were all pretty crazy. Post-menopausal ladies from the burbs would max out their credit cards seeing the show over and over and over again, hoping Hugh Jackman would notice them and ravish them after the show in his dressing room. I will admit, I was a repeat visitor and got to meet Hugh a few times, but these women were nuts. They were also in serious debt. The night before the final show, one of the Ozalots spread her mother's ashes outside the stage door.
