Does there have to be a 5th nominee or can they choose to nom four despite there being a sufficient number of shows to have 5 nominees?

"

According to the rules, it's the former.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. Whatever ends up taking the fifth slot this year will only be there as filler (unless the nominating committee actually enjoyed it more than the critics did).

What if...

Elisabeth had reviewed PRIMA FACIE and...

Jesse had reviewed NEW YORK, NEW YORK?

Do you think the reviews for each would have been decidedly more favorable?

Wow! I signed off for a couple hours only to find these reviews! OUCH! Yeah, I think I’m gonna see something else next month! Maybe Oliver at Encores?

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

Remember PARADISE SQUARE...

I think NYNY still gets the 5th slot. Unless they do something truly crazy like nominate AMOST FAMOUS.

It's a real shame the Tonys have a 5-nominee minimum for Best Musical and other categories.

I didn't think I'd be saying this two months ago, but I think I agree that A Beautiful Noise would probably be my pick for the 5th slot. I think its biggest crime was being kind of boring but at least it had a coherent plotline and wasn't drawn out, and you actually felt for the characters (sometimes).

I can still probably see NYNY getting nominated on technical elements alone, but it would just be more of a courtesy nod than anything.

I was thinking the same thing. Interesting that Elisabeth reviewed that one too.

Does anyone know how they decide at the NYT who reviews what?

Eek. Those were pretty rough.

I do still think NYNY snags that fifth slot for Best Musical but I would be feeling a little bit better if I was involved with A Beautiful Noise right about now...
