The bath scene takes place on land. The audience seemed to get a kick out of the maid's costumes when I saw it in Denver.

At first I thought the chamber maids were supposed to be ducks/chickens. I really want to put my hand up against those skirts or whatever you would call them they are wearing.

Ok, finally got them to load...still don't really like it. I think it's honestly the combo of skirts/tails. I dunno...I won't pass complete judgements.

And yes, to whomever it was, I CAN and WILL have an opinion. This is a free world, and you are not my keeper, nor the keeper of truth.

Thank you.

I would not pay to go and see two hours of wire work its horrible.

This is a bit hypocritical considering you just criticized others for not being creative and imaginative enough to accept the pot-scrubber maid costumes.

Sorry ullabelt but some people might think that it is just bad design that is ruining SOME of Broadway. It ain't going nowhere. So until I go blind, (probably over poor set inspirations), I will hold on to what I think is good and what is not. Then I will probably pay even more attention to the singing and that may doom even more shows for me.

Anyone can glue a bunch of garbage together and call that a Costume. Someone with talent and a brilliant imagination can take that same garbage and make it into something most people will admire.

If I won't go see a visually poor show, especially one with a huge budget and it flops, then maybe, it is past the time to admit that your work just isn't relating to the subject matter at hand. You wouldn't want me to see it because if it looks that bad, I won't even notice the singing or acting, just how awful everyone looked and how uninspired Disney has become.

Not everything, everyone comes up with looks good. I refuse to see the Nutcracker again until they get a better costume designer. That is just a fact.

I don't want to see maids look like chickens. Why does that look make me think of African Slavery during that era? Just what I need! Those seats look like shells? It's like going to the Lion King and watching White Tigers, singing with tulips and bluebells in their manes around a maypole! It could happen, in Alice in Wonderland but not buying it for the Lion King. I see this photo and think, what a low rent castle!

Not everything anyone creates is a "masterpiece". Any honest creative person knows you have to keep a perspective on things overall. You also have to be willing to go back and try again if it fails to impress others. Like the fact that Ursula doesn't even remotely resemble either an Octopus or a Squid for that matter. If you can't do that, on a commercial project, than your vanity has exceeded your talent.

If I didn't care, I would just say it sucks and save your money. Instead, I feel it can be fixed. If I have enough talent to make fake octopus arms they better have it or give me the check please and I care enough to make them for them. It will cost them though if I have to do it for them. They really are very simple to make.

I think I see why they went with wheelies now for the mermaids.
Ursula's costume however is still the most heinous design I have ever seen. That's not hyperbole, it's unbelievably ugly.

Wasn't there an old saying "Dont Judge a Book by its Cover"?

I'll wait to pass judgement till I see the show. It probably all works within context. And if it doesn't or you don't like it? Don't go see it!

I'm not defending this show, because it has doone net yet to earn that yet.

What I'm trying to say is don't by the dress without trying it on!

Oh and by the way, the good news is if the show closes Flotsum and Jetsums costumes can be used over at the Grinch...Christmas.

These are the first pictures to peek my interest. I thought this show sounded like a bad idea from the first time I heard they were going to try to put The Little Mermaid on stage, but these pictures look so hyper stylized and fanciful that I’m starting to think this show might actually work. It looks like they created an entire fantasy world that pops with vibrancy and excitement. Thank God they didn’t try for realism or a carbon copy of the movie the world they created looks much more interesting.

All the frills on the maids costumes remind me of bubbles. Wasn't that scene full of bubbles in the movie?
I honestly don't see the big deal about the Ursula costume. I think it looks cool. Sure, it's not realistic but this is a show about mermaids for pete's sake. Use your imagination. It looks a lot better than what Ursula is in the movie.

Besides, if you think the Ursula costume is ugly, you should see the costumes they make their cast members at Disney World wear. Hideous.

The reason I continue to try and convince you guys to see the show (other than the fact I actually like the costumes) is because I haven't read any reviews that said there was a problem with Ursula's costume (or the mermaids' for that matter)!

They always went after the show for the less than stellar second act and Scuttle and Flounder's costumes. Most of you who haven't seen it are judging it by Ursula's costume and other things like that when I urge you to listen to the reviews. Everyone I have talked to said that Ursula and the mermaids' costumes worked wonderfully.

Why do most want a literal translation from cartoon to stage? Ursula with big black rubbery tentacles that worked mechanically would look like a silly disney children's ride. These pics at least show some artistry. Until you see the entire world The director has created you can't really judge how it works. Of course many will by these pics, and do, but I would hope people with any hope and passion for live theater would give it a break until they see the director's ENTIRE vision.

"Why do most want a literal translation from cartoon to stage?"

Who said that they wanted that? I don't see any posts saying they want that, never mind "most." I don't hear people saying they are adverse to artistry or reinterpretation. I think what they are saying is that they are just not thrilled with certain aspects of this interpretation. What's wrong with that?

I'm a person of hope and passion for live theatre. But that doesn't mean I sit silently watching images float by as they're released without comment. This is a theatre discussion board and that's what we do here. We discuss these things critically as they are presented to us. It's happened with every show to date. what's so sacred about Ursula that we can't do it with her too?

"who said they wanted that?"

-a lot of people. Many people said that it should be more like "Beauty and the Beast" - which is as close to a literal translation of cartoon to stage as i've ever seen. I don't feel like searching and posting all of those comments, but we all know we've read them.

"a lot of people. Many people said that it should be more like "Beauty and the Beast" "

Well nobody says anything like that in this thread. And I've been following all the Mermaid threads and can only remember one person making that B&B reference. And if there was more than one it certainly wasn't "many" or "most."

What gets me are certain people who have a particular penchant for not tolerating any criticism of something they happen to like. Nobody in these threads is telling people they can't say they like the costumes. So why do some people insist on telling people they can't talk about not liking them? This board is about critical thinking and discussion of theatre, isn't it? Or is it just a big positive, love everything or shut up fansite?

"critical thinking and discussion of theater"...couldn't agree more. However, most opnions being expressed are based on a handful of press photos and NOT on the actual piece of theatre itself. I respect anyone's opinion who has actually seen the show. How the costumes work in context of the director's vision can hardly be speculated from a handful of press shots. I have no desire to see the Mermaid the Mouse built and probably won't see it,I just find it funny and a little sad that once again the boards are picking apart something that hasn't even opened in previews.

"I just find it funny and a little sad that once again the boards are picking apart something that hasn't even opened in previews."

But "most people" are not discussing the merits of the show, only of the costumes, which we have seen whether in context of the director's vision or not. I'm not writing off, picking apart or even judging the show. For all I know I'll see the show someday (not really) and say, "oh, I see what they were going for with those costumes." But until then, I have eyes. Of course I can have and state an opinion on what I have seen.

I mean really, the photos were released on a theatre discussion board. I think it's perfectly ridiculous of anyone to expect board members not to critique them!

And what's "funny and a little sad" are people who condescendingly try to dismiss and invalidate others by using pious phrases like "funny and a little sad."
