According to Variety, Nathan and Matthew have signed on for a movie version of The Producers. It will begin filming in July 2005 for a late 2005 release.

YAY! Will this be a stage version or an actual movie?
mid-7 figure deals for each of the guys...
tack that on to the 100,000 a week for the current run, and we're looking at a couple new houses in the Hamptons...
I think it's gotta be stylized stage production... a'la the Jesus Christ Superstart DVD... Of course with the success of 'Chicago' they might go all out... and forget the confines of a few sets.
Hey, if the movie does well, there could be a stage version of the second movie. Ugh!
It's going to be a movie, not a stage shooting.

Well, the absurdity has now hit its peak: a feature film of the stage butchering of a classic comedy. I suppose it could be worse - they could be making a feature film of ALW's Sunset Boulevard. But not much worse.

I read in an article earlier that it is due out in late 2005. Brooks, co-writer Thomas Meehan and director Susan Stroman are also on board...
I don't think I'll bother seeing the movie. I've had enough Lane for a lifetime. I guess the film producers don't have enough faith in the material to offer the role to someone else. I'm sure Lane can start rehearsing his Oscar speech...
I am excited about seeing Matthew and Nathan in the movie version. I failed to see them in the Broadway version. I did see the Producers but not with them in it. Mel Brooks knows what sells and what makes money!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah but a remake of your own movie?? I am all about musical films but i think executives are losing their minds over what to do.
I think this could be excellent. We can't forget our favorite tapping little old ladies!
haha yeah until all the taping old ladies are the present cast of american idol! I am joking.

Should be interesting. I'm have yet, and probably will not, see the current production. Meaning, that'll be the closest I'll ever come to seeing Nathan and Matthew in their famous roles.
I actually posted about this a few weeks ago...there was an earlier article about it (not Playbill) where Mel Brooks was interviewed and he brought up the film....I'll try to find that article again
"I'm sure Lane can start rehearsing his Oscar speech... "
Why? The Oscars aren't generally as gullible as The Tonys and Nathan's hardly a star out west.
here's the link of the article i posted before.
"That musical hit that just won't quit"
"The Oscars aren't generally as gullible as The Tonys"
You're right. Generally, they're more gullible. Ever since The Birdcage, Lane has been more recognized by the general public and with the overwhelming success of The Producers, he's much more popularly known. You think the Academy doesn't know this man? If the movie is successful, Lane will most likely be nominated at the least. Should the film be a runaway hit like Chicago, then a win a most certainly a possibility. The critics love him. The only thing that may hold him back are those that feel he is simply reprising his stage performance and offering nothing new to the film (which didn't stop Yul Brynner).
I've got odds right here and right now that a movie version of 'The Producers' musical is irrelevant come Oscar night of the appropriate year.
Especially if Mel Brooks directs.
This was a bit before my time..but in addition to Yul Brynner....didn't Joel Grey win the same way for Cabaret(stage version and film)?

It says in the article on broadway.com that movie adaptations of Hairspray and Wicked are also in development! How cool is that...I hope they mean the Musical versions...If so Idina and Cheno in Wicked...and Harvey and Marissa in Hairpsray! It's perfect!!!! I think it is a great idea they are starting to bring back musicals on the silver screen...I just hope they don't destroy them!!!! Here is the link to the article...
Movie Musicals...

Personally, I can't stand the idea. THE PRODUCERS is Mel Brook's "love letter" to the STAGE. Unless they seriously revamp the show and make it a love letter to old-time movie musicals, (a la MGM)I don't think it will work. What would THE PRODUCERS be like with out those mechanical pigeons??? Or Gary Beach sitting at the end of the stage doing Judy at the Palace?
Ps. Great post Broadwaylyric
I don't want to take us too far off topic, but I've been thinking bout this for awhile, and I'm kinda new here:
Is anyone else worried about the throng of Stage to Screen transfers?
I think it's great for the industry... but
Screen to Stage to Screen is a bad idea I think (Hairspray, The Producers)
Stage to Screen is frightening for other shows.. (Some in production, some further behind)
Wicked - (Great story, could've been filmed first)
POTO - I think it might be wrecked on film...
On edge...

I actually think WICKED would be much improved as a MOVIE musical. They'd hopefully make it a bit darker. And maybe add new songs and cut some clunkers.
