BroadwayWorld has learned that a new national tour of the classic Broadway musical Peter Pan will launch in 2023. Casting and dates have yet to be announced for the tour, which is being produced by NETworks.
Other shows touring under the NETworks banner in 2023 include Beetlejuice, To Kill A Mockingbird, Hairspray, The Book Of Mormon, Les Miserables Anastasia, and the post-Broadway tour of the revival of 1776.
Based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale and featuring an unforgettable score by Morris "Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. This high-flying Tony Award-winning musical has been performed around the world and delighted audiences for nearly 70 years.

Ugh... hard pass. I'm so over Peter Pan... It's like Annie in that it just won't go away. There's a new tour sprouting up every five years or so.

I mentioned about this production a while ago in the touring thread. I'm going to assume it will be popping up on lists pretty soon, so they are making an official announcement.
Will be interesting to see who gets cast, although I assume this isn't a big first contract equity tour. And I'm assuming at the age of 70, Cathy Rigby has hung up her green tights, so it will be the first major tour in a number of years not to star her as Peter.

No director listed. Wonder if it will be a rehash of what previously toured with Rigby, or a newly imagined production.

The description seems to indicate it will be a new production. I have to imagine they’ll at least be using the updated “True Blood Brothers” instead of “Ugh-A-Wug.” I like Peter Pan so I would see it if it’s near me. Aside from filmed versions, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Peter Pan without Cathy Rigby.

This is one of those musicals that I will always attend and can usually find something to love, even in the most mediocre of productions.

This show seems ripe for a new vision. I'd enjoy seeing a production that really leans into the whimsy of the story and reimagines the tired production design that doesn't seem to have changed much over the decades. Perhaps embracing the theatricality and creative staging of Peter & The Starcatcher or something similar. Seems like with the right director, you could do something new and interesting with it.

I agree...how can anyone not love at least Act 1. I was lucky to see Sandy Duncan in this twice, and it is one of my favorite performances...she exuded joy to the extent that you had a grin on your face every single minute of the show. Rigby was actually solid, but paled next to Duncan.

But will they be able to stop in Arizona?

I live in Phoenix and honestly no one here has issues with drag except a minority of hard right Republicans. Whatever this bill is that is in session probably won’t pass, and if it does, I really don’t think it will affect plays and musicals. Besides, there is that double standard that a woman playing a man is find, but a man playing a woman is “gay.” No one will object to Peter Pan.
That said, I cannot see this show going well (especially in places with large Native populations like AZ) if they don’t make major changes to the “Indian” stuff - as in, cut it out altogether.

It’s pretty common for proven-success shows to kick around the touring circuit “forever” - and unlike most of those shows, this one sounds like it’ll actually be a new production, and as noted above, the previous tour was over a decade ago. So it doesn’t seem that egregious to me. Plus it feels pretty on-brand for NetWorks.

Well, maybe this time Peter will be played by...A BOY?

Oh, I could definitely see this show being turned into a new moral panic episode for the GOP. People are in such total denial about what is happening.

In case people missed it, last week it was announced that this production will be directed by Lonny Price, and will feature a revised book by Larissa FastHorse. And press release doesn't shy away from the fact that she was hired, in part, as an effort to combat the racist depictions of Indigenous people in the story.
Would be very curious to see this, though I don't know if I'll have an opportunity.

I’m very curious to see this. I love Peter Pan, I have a lot of nostalgia around it. I am so glad that it’s getting some much needed cultural sensitivity. I thought the one good thing about Peter Pan live was rewriting Ugg a Wug.
