If Desiree were played by Vanessa Williams or Audra McDonald, I think Cicely Tyson would also make a compelling Madame Armfeldt.

Many people mentioned were asked, either for the original (Nicole Kidman in particular) or to replace CZJ and AL. Brooke Shields came very close to signing on to replace CZJ, but then was offered the lead in "Leap of Faith."

My first choice has always been Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Kate Baldwin played Charlotte in Baltimore two years ago. Apparently, she was the best part of a misbegotten production.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

"Frederick is actually a wonderful role; and Szot is definitely not too bulky or handsome for the part -- actually, Hanson's replacement, Stephen Buntrock is very much in the Paulo Szot mold phsycially...."

No doubt Paulo can act out Fredrik, and in my opinion, he is going to be the sexiest Fredrik in history, but there's only one song for him that really shows his singing technique. As for the bulky-handsome problem, I'm just afraid that Paulo's charm and physique will be as equal, or even out shine the Count's advantages over Fredrik. Stephen, to me, also has the same problem. Well, but then again, this is just my reading on Fredrik the character. As a starring role in the musical, Paulo will be a very fine choice. Updated On: 9/8/10 at 11:11 AM

If the show were to be recast with color blind casting, and Desiree was played by an African American or black woman, Mme. could still be played by a white woman, correct? And vice versa?

Idina Menzel as Desiree and Barbra Streisand as Mme. Just kidding, but I did crack myself up. Call it religion blind casting.

"I'm just afraid that Paulo's charm and physique will be as equal, or even out shine the Count's advantages over Fredrik."

I find it SO cute how attractive you find Paulo. But (assuming the current count looks like Aaron Lazar, and Paulo looks like he did on the PBS South Pacific) I think that standing them next to each other, it would be clear that the count is very fit and Paulo is a little (just a little!) sloppy.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Bradley Dean looks nothing like Aaron Lazar. He is a bigger guy.

Have to admit that he did have that gut. I hope it will go back in when we see him next time. :P

How about Julie Harris as Madame Armfeldt?

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

As far as the Baltimore production, there were only a few weak links: namely Maxwell Caulfield as Carl Magnus, and Polly Bergen as Madame Armfeldt.

Any of the other cast members would fair beautifully in their roles on broadway:
Barbara Walsh was a more cynical Desiree, but still lovely
Sarah Uriarte Berry was great as Petra
and Josh Young was great as Henrik, in face better in my opinion than Herdlicka

I would also love to see Karen Ziemba take on Desiree, though I doubt that would ever happen on Broadway.

Yes that's me. No, it's not a Rent homage.
