On Jan 20th The Greatest Star of All, Bernadette Peters, starts performances in Hello, Dolly! This follows perhaps the longest Broadway preview period/try-out in history where an actress called Bette something helped get the show ready for Bernadette to step in when the time was right.
Please post your thoughts, reactions, tears, fantasies here. I’ve already started spooning my Follies pillow in anticipation. That thing has had a lot of workout over the years.
Moments I can’t wait for:
* When she lifts the newspaper down and reveals herself for the first time.
* Her general over-the-top musical comedy shtick. She was born to play this role.
* The quality of her vocal performance, which historically seems to be a rare feature of stars in this musical.
* A fresh new pairing with Victor Garber, who is a rare sight on Broadway.
* When she walks down that staircase for the first time.
* “Before The Parade Passes By” - which will now be an absolute show stopper.
* Bernadette doing something a bit different - she has not been in a big splashy frivolous Broadway musical comedy for a long time. In fact, it’s not exactly the kind of role she has usually played in recent times. I’ll bump this thread closer to the first performance. Make sure you get your tickets!
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Front row Mezz Feb 18th (my birthday). Also so happy to see Charlie Stemp as Barnaby. I saw him in London in Half a Six Pence and I think he will bring a wonderful energy to the show.
I too will be there January 20th. Bernadette in Gypsy at the Shubert was my first Broadway musical, and I love this production so much I’ve already gone three times.
I anticipate being overjoyed and overwhelmed and over par!
Pretty sure that’s some fanmade photoshop art. They didn’t release any early shots of Bette or Donna in costume and highly doubt they do of Bernadette either.

I'm sure most people have tickets already, but for those who don't, Dolly with Bernadette is included in the TodayTix Cyber Monday sale! You'll have to pay a $12.50 service fee per ticket but the discounted prices are pretty good. I assumed her run was selling better than it seems to be.
It's the same discount you can get from Theatermania - but at least with their, you KNOW what seats you are getting!
(But thanks for posting, I got 50% for Sweeney Todd for April!)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Has anyone used the Today Tix "Concierge" service? On Monday I bought a ticket to see Ms. Peters for only $39 total (used a discount code). It seems Today Tix is a legit company, but I'm a little weary of the whole "we can't tell you what seats you have so pick them from the concierge". The Yelp reviews seem to be positive.
I have a feeling this deal is too good to be true.

It is a legit company! You won't know the exact seat of the section you chose, but trust me, the service is fantastic. I use it all the time in Chicago, the customer service is very kind and accommodating. I have my tickets to Dolly for next Tuesday ($99 Row A-D of Mezz? How could I not?!) and Sweeney tix for next March. It's one of my favorite services.
It looks like Bernadette has sold basically all regularly priced tickets for the first performance (premium seats still available). The Sunday performance is almost the same, although availability is wide open on the Tuesday. Things are looking pretty good though!

Hope she does well and the box office is good for her performances. I love her and think she is great, saw her for the first time many years ago in "Song And Dance".
