Hey guys! I'm wondering: What do you think are the most overrated musicals of the last 10 years, including revivals? Which shows do you think have gotten too much praise/attention/hype?

Next To Normal's music is well written, just not that great to listen to. It wears on my ears, same with Alice Ripley's voice, although I do enjoy her work in the show. I would like to see it performed one day though, just to see what it's like on stage.

I'd add Dear Evan Hansen to this list as well- the show has a terrible story and the music has it's moments, but the story brings it down. I personally find Ben Platt's interpretation of the lyrics to not be very authentic to the character.

There three for me were incredibly hard to sit though.
Fun Home is a downer of a show, but I think it's really good.

So are these all overrated shows, or just shows that you all don't like? The title Overrated would probably fall onto something like the revival of Cats or Paramour for example. They both keep (or kept) chugging along, but they were both mediocre. Then again, overrated is subjective.

I think Dear Evan Hansen is the only one that's been hyped up that I've actively disliked. I usually love the popular show and most of these mentioned here (Next to Normal, Hamilton, Fun Home, Natasha).

Gotta love how, with few exceptions, no one here is even bothering to explain why they think a show is overrated...
^ For me, overrated means not as good as it's hyped up to be. In general. I'm not expecting specific reasons why.
Hamilton and Kinky Boots are the biggest, for me. I think Hamilton is good, but not nearly as good as its hype would suggest, so to me it's the dictionary definition of overrated.
Kinky Boots has always made me scratch my head. Pretty sequins, but the book and score are so... remedial. The book in particular.

Book of Mormon hands down. It has some catchy songs, but it just wasn't all that funny. I thought a lot of the humor was cheap and obvious.

I'd still like to hear the thoughts of other people, rather then just listing 4-5 random musicals.
You think they're overrated? Explain why.

It's interesting that some have just listened to a recording and than class the show overrated.

i still enjoyed each of these shows very much, they are just overrated relative to hype and awards and i ding every one of them for a weak score relative to hype and awards
Billy Elliot- weak ass score for best musical
Gentlemans Guide hilarious comedy and Mays was extraordinary, but a really weak score for a best musical winner
Once for being basically a one song best musical (Falling Slowly really is a fantastic song...)
An American in Paris for just not being that great a show relative to all the hype and fauning. more a ballet-cical than a musical
Fun Home- amazing drama, really weak score for best musical(its best musical not best dramical)
