Sad, but most definetly expected.
My guess is that the musical version of VANITIES (which is expected to open on Broadway in November with an October start to previews after an August through September out of town run in Pasadena) will take The Belasco, since the trio of actresses starring in the show recently said in a podcast interview with Broadway Bullet that the production team had a theater already.
They hinted that they couldn't disclose which theater they expected to take in New York yet because it was occupied by a show that hadn't closed yet, so the time frame would sink up perfectly with the announcement of the shuttering of PASSING STRANGE.
We knew (with some of scaryotypes~blaxx, joe5, benkaye and yankeefan) that they were closing. We were told it was sooner, around 7/6 but I AM GLAD that it lasted at least 3 weeks longer! we just did not post it and keep our mouths shut. yup! people WE CAN KEEP secrets!
At least it was PRESERVED for all to see! I am sad yet HAPPY that future generations will have a chance to see this masterpiece!
Long Live PASSING STRANGE!

I thought the Belasco was going to be renovated next.

IMO, The most original and ground breaking show on Broadway.

I really wanted to see this show live in the fall when there. I am glad that it will be preserved. And glad Spike Lee is doing it.
Since you mentioned it more than once, CONGRATULATIONS jaystarr, for being "in-on" such insider information! You must be totally fufilled to be a tried and true member of the inner circle on Broadway.
Can we please keep the bickering to a dull roar, for God sakes....
Bickering? haha, you must be coming from a very negative place.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehn, adieu...
I still think the Tonys killed it...I know it killed any interest I ever had in seeing it.
Really, a show just posted its closing notice and people (including Jaystarr, I'm sure) are reasonably upset about it (I know I am, anyway). Can you hold off picking on fans for I don't know, an hour, at least? Gratzi.
Since VANITIES isn't coming in until October or November, they could do some decent renovating in the three or four months the house would sit dark.
Ideally, I know the production team wanted The Helen Hayes, but it doesn't look like it'll be available in time for when they want the show to transfer (almost directly after the out of town tryout.)

HORRORS!!!
The blindness of these producers, allowing the greatest musical and intellectual achievement since the beginning of time CLOSE!!!
I guess I must take comfort in the thought that STEW moves in mysterious ways, his PASSING STRANGE to perform.
At least we'll have DVD.
HAIL STEW!!!
Stop it. It's just starting but it's already annoying.
The renovation of the Belasco has been in the wings for at least a number of years, and it would probably be a 6-8 month job...ver., very sorely needed, to restore it's former glory.
All Scaryotypes, you can also post your continuing love on the Official PS Love Thread.
Thanks Jay* for you love of EVERYTHING theater, and especially PS.
And thanks to the new fans.
And to the bashers --- actually as Stew says it best: ..."And it's alllriiiiiiiight"! We love our little show just as much as ever, just like fans of other shows love theirs..

Maybe I'll go to the closing. You know that's gonna be a helluva show.
Ditto bwayjim, after that Tony performance I was so put off that I didn't even want to see it. I might watch it if it comes on TV or DVD but from the songs on the cast recording and their Tony performance I stayed away from the Belasco like the plague.
You know that's gonna be a helluva show.
Without a doubt.

I hope I'm not too late to get tickets to the final performance. I have a feeling it will be an event.

arocks, bwayjm, yeah, it wasn't much of a show. Some kickass music, to be fair, but not much else.
Rent the DVD, there will be worse ways to kill a couple of hours.
Sigh... dang it!

I, too, was put off by the Tony performance. However, whatever your thoughts of the show, it's sad to see one close!!

Just like your posts! A few good comments, but not much else.
