Patti has mentioned she had auditioned to replace Bernadette in the original production but Sondheim wouldn't let her because he didn't want it belted. Ms. Peters belts quite a lot in the show as well as using a more legit style head voice. So it seems strange Patti didn't get because of "belting". Patti could have done it. Anyone have any opinions on why she she wasn't allowed to do it? How do you think she would have done in the role? For the record I absolutely adore Bernadettes portrayal of Dot/Marie
I don't think Patti would have been a good Dot/Marie: don't get me wrong, I love Patti, but she doesn't really give her best singing Sondheim... her performances in Passion and Anyone can whistle weren't exactly an amazing piece of acting...
And then we have to remember than Patti tells a lot of stories...

Wait. I thought Patti auditioned for ITW before Bernadette was cast. Or at least that's what she's said in the past, right?
Patti would have made an incredible Witch.
I would've LOVED to see her as the witch. I can actually see her playing Dot when she was younger. It would be interesting to hear if there are any recordings of her when she was younger singing those songs.

I can think of several reasons why LuPone wouldn't get the role. First, her diction has never been that good. Sondheim wanted his lyrics heard. Second, Patti always belts. Always. She can't not belt. Third, her Evita reputation as being "difficult" was still very fresh in people's minds. Fourth, when Patti gets bored with a role, she becomes creative. You listen to some of the later Evita bootlegs and she sings her own timing, she speaks phrases that should be sung, she makes up her own notes. Fifth, Patti's phrasing is not that good. Never has been.
But most importantly: She's just not Dot. Dot was shy, quiet and longing for attention. Patti could never have played that. It would be like Ethel Merman playing Laura in The Glass Menagerie.
Patti doesn't always belt. Her entire "Matters of the Heart" album is not belting, just pure singing.
It's interesting that before she played Eva Peron, Patti was able to replace someone like Carole Demas in THE BAKER'S WIFE. After EVITA she was pigeonholed as this brash, brassy belter.

Patti would have been an incredible Witch, but apparently went to the auditions determined to get cast as Cinderella.

But I wonder if that's why Demas was replaced. They wanted someone to belt "Meadowlark." It's a possibility that there just wasn't enough life in the show and they needed the female character to punch it up a notch.
Has anyone besides Patti ever confirmed that David Merrick wanted "Meadowlark" out of the show?

The story on ITW is she went in for Cinderella afterwards Sondheim said he wanted her for the witch. Apparently she agreed but mentions in her Seth Rudeksty Concert that "negotiations fell apart" and it just didn't happen. Patti would be a killer witch. She could still do it. Maybe at the Ravina festival or something.
I adore Patti, but i don't think she has the delicate sweetness that Dot needs.
I do agree that she would've been a great Witch, but then we wouldn't have gotten Bernadette's beautiful portrayal.
I love hearing Patti singing andrew lloyd webber

Once again, take everything that she says with a huge grain of salt. Do we really believe her as Cinderella? I can see the witch or the Baker's Wife, but Cinderella? No way.

Well, what she said is that THEY wanted her to audition for the Witch but SHE wanted to audition for Cinderella. Which means that "we" don't really believe her as Cinderella.
I'm glad she didn't play the Witch, because then we wouldn't have gotten her brilliant Reno Sweeney that season.
LuPone could play the witch tomorrow. She has the voice. I'd pay to see it.
Out of fairness to Miss LuPone, I'd like to note that actors RARELY know why they didn't get a certain part. Casting directors and agents lie to them, trying to be kind. Sometimes actors lie to themselves. The "Street" is always full of gossip.
To keep their sanity, most actors make up some sort of reason why they didn't get a part. Having worked mainly on the other side of the apron, I can attest that more often than not with a talented performer, it's simply a matter of budget or that the creators don't yet know what they want from the part.
On the steps of the PALACCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-AH!
I would actually still pay good money to see her take on the Witch today. I don't see any reason why she couldn't do it now.

Other than the witch needs to be beautiful.
How rude (and untrue).
