<< I was at the matinee this past Sunday and the audience was quite calm... especially in Act 1. The applause were not as enthusiastic as I am used to and there was very little laughing at the funny parts. The audience energy picked up in Act 2. Of course, even without the best audience, the show was still amazing! >>
Thanks, TJ ! That's sort of the way the crowd was last night (happens alot on Tues, given the early start time)
I saw this about 6 weeks ago and, while I LOVED it, I really had the feeling that I would not be returning. Partially because I didn't want to worry about living up to the high standards the first performance had created, and partially because I wasn't sure how much I want to emotionally get run over.
I had picked up the cd, and while listening over the last few weeks, I find myself yearning to see it again. So I'm going again on Saturday. Very excited. Picked up a great seat, Row A, on the center aisle -- and at a discount. I first saw this from the mezz...so looking forward to the different perspective.
Anyone else hitting the matinee???
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I hope you (and the cast) have PLENTY to celebrate!

Ick, really? That's what time I was planning to get there. Do you still have a decent chance at front row if you get there around 8? I'm hoping to rush on Friday but I am SO not a morning person.
heo ~ The last time I tried rushing was a couple of weeks ago (the Tuesday of the cast recording signing) and at that point, those there by 8 probably got a center seat, but a lot more schools have gotten out, and word of mouth is spreading, so I may be wrong, but I honestly think 8am is going to be too late to get a front row center seat.

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
Thanks jordangirl! Ugh I suppose I'll get there closer to 7 then...I suppose afternoons were made for naps lol.
sbflyfan, totally agree! With the "bum bum bum"s? That was my favorite! Before DC, Natalie and Dan used to have lines in that section as well. I wish that kept that in! Updated On: 5/28/09 at 11:58 AM
Some interesting updates regarding seats/discounts, etc.
They've very quietly changed the price of the discount from $60/75 to $70/$85. Also, when my friend went to the box office today, she was told that the discounted seats are now restricted to less desirable locations. This is a definite change from when you could get virtually any seat in the house at a discounted price.
Very good news that the show seems to be selling well, but bad news for those of us who want to keep seeing it. The good news is, the school year is almost over for me, so weekday rush will soon be an option.
For now, I look forward to attending June 6 at 8 PM, and then June 9 at 7 PM, when hopefully they'll be celebrating a great Tony upset!
Something random: does anyone know why the show refers to Natalie's audition (being called onto the stage, plays only one selection in front of judges) as a recital?
Ohh, ok. For some reason I thought she was trying to get into Yale through her recital performance "rock that recital and get into Yale"), which I'd never heard of before.
"Am I the only one who really misses "It only hurts when I'm here... / It only hurts when he goes..." during "Just Another Day"?"
No, you're not. But I also think they should have left the dialogue in during "Light" if not just recording the show live and releasing everything. I love me some underscoring, counterpoints, and transitions.
Speaking of missing dialogue, I miss Natalie asking Henry if he saw her parents in the audience before her recital. I think it's kind of awkward as it's recorded, where it just has Natalie singing "She's not there, she's not there, she's not there!!" out of the blue.
I noticed yesterday (this is what happens when you cant stop listening to something !!! LOL) that Dan only says "Gabe", not "Gabe... Gabriel" on the recording.
I think they did things to the recording like those mentioned in the last few posts just to keep the plot pretty hush-hush. And I think they did a good job of hiding the twists on the recording. It stands on its own and you can certainly listen to it if you haven't yet seen the show and don't want to have anything spoiled.
re: the album, I guess it's a question of purpose: do you use the album to sell the show or as a historical document?
Also, I'm absolutely thrilled right now. I don't live in the US but my mother's in NYC and rarely goes to the theatre by herself. She had some extra days off this week and decided to treat it as a staycation and asked for what to see besides Mary Stuart.
You can all guess what I said since I'm posting in this thread.
Now, I should qualify this: my mother is not a rocker. Despite growing up in the 60's her Beatles 45s clearly stop before Revolver, and try though I did, could never get her to see RENT with me. Spring Awakening was right out. Likewise this is someone who wouldn't see the Sweeney revival or The Pillowman because they sounded too dark. So I said it would be revealing too much to tell her the plot, and simply that N2N is not a happy show, but a fulfilling one and worth holding out on despite possible first act doubts.
So what happened? She found it "dark and heavy but really really powerful" and claims that she's normal compared to Diana.
I consider this a massive victory and with this hurdle jumped officially set my tony prediction to Book/Score N2N Musical BE.
Next to Normal looks so good! I went on broadway.com and checked out the video section (haven't been on the site for a while), and they had the Next to Normal ads before the videos came up, and those just sparked my interest.
I actually bought an iTunes card today, so I'll download some songs!
I suggest "I'm Alive," "Just Another Day," "Superboy and the Invisible Girl," "I Miss the Mountains," "I Am The One," "Light," "I've Been," "A Light in the Dark," and "You Don't Know." But if you can, get the whole CD.
