So I know everyone is sharping their knives over NBC's live Peter Pan this week, and rightly so. But I'd like to throw out one glorious example of 70s awfulness to remind us all that however bad this is going to be (and it probably will)...at least it doesn't have Mia Farrow's off-key crooning. At least it doesn't have a past-his-prime Danny Kaye sleepwalking his way through Captain Hook At least it doesn't have Anthony Newley songs so half-assed that if I was told he and Leslie Bricusse wrote the entire score in one booze-soaked afternoon, I'd be shocked it took them that long. In short...at least it will not be as bad as this:

We are?! And why would that be "right"?

Why will it?!

There are so many things worth sharpening knives over. Like the ART in Cambridge plugging the live broadcast as "The other side of Finding Neverland…". But why would anybody have knives out for Peter Pan?
Okay, so I'm hedging my bets that this will not be very good. I am not sure if that is a widely-held opinion, but what I have seen has not given me a lot of confidence. I'm hoping it will be at least watchable. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if this thing will turn out great. I'm just...uh...a little doubtful. Updated On: 12/1/14 at 01:10 AM
Easy fix: As soon as you determine it is not watchable, stop watching?
I'm really looking forward to it.
And Danny Kay was past his prime in the 70s?
Everyone I know is looking forward to it, no one is sharpening knives.
Good to know that one bad performance means you are washed up. And for what its worth.....I don't even think he delivers a bad performance at all.
I too am looking forward to Peter Pan. From what I've seen it looks like it is going to be pretty darn good. I am a sucker for anything like this performed live on TV!
I love that 1976 version of PETER PAN. I remember watching it as a kid when it premiered on NBC's Hallmark Hall of Fame. This is the version I knew of before I ever knew about the version with Mary Martin. Paula Kelly was Tiger Lily! So there :-P
Add me to the list of looking forward to as well. Not sure why one would go in with knives out?
^ No one really is. The OP was just projecting his ill feelings towards the new production onto the rest of the board is all.
Eh. Fair enough. I am glad to know that I am in a minority. I would be very glad to be wrong. :)
I DO stand by the awfulness of the 1976 version. Mostly because of the songs, which are just...just terrible.

NBC's Pan shows great promise and the potential to improve upon the existing material, so far as the musical is concerned. Much of the cast and physical production has me incredibly excited. Do I have reservations about a few choices they have made and a few design elements I have seen? Of course. None of that could ruin it for me.
As far as the Farrow / Kaye Pan goes... Well, awful from top to bottom. In every fashion. The only part I like is Julie Andrews singing the opening credits song. And as Pan / Barrie devotee, I scream every time they say "moon dust"
"I would be very glad to be wrong. :)"
Why not just wait until it airs to form any opinion? Unless you didn't like their previews during the Thanksgiving Parade or something actually about this production.
I remember seeing the Mia Farrow Peter Pan when I was 5 years old. It never re-ran, and was never really spoken of, so all these years I thought it must have been the original Broadway musical. I was surprised to find out it wasn't. Very strange watching it, it all came back to me.
I'm looking forward to NBC's new Peter Pan. It's a proven property that has certainly been done very successfully on television before.
I think The Sound of Music was pretty good last year, but for one, obvious, fatal flaw.
The one thing I won't miss once the show airs is the ad on here for it. No matter if I click on the x prior it still opens each time I sign on here.
^^^^^^
Yes that ad that overtakes the page! Cracks me up every time.

I think the Mia Farrow PETER PAN was not well liked because it didn't stand up well when compared to the Mary Martin musical. If you don't judge it comparatively it is not that bad. I actually like the song that the Lost Boys sing about mothers, and I think Kaye looks like he is having a grand time as Hook. But, when you put it up against the Mary Martin version, forget it.
That may be what happens with this version. I think the Cathy Rigby video of about 15 years ago made big improvements over the Martin video (though I still think Sandy Duncan was a better Peter). The question is whether this version will be better than that one. A great deal is resting on Williams's portrayal of Peter; the person in that role usually makes or breaks the production. From what I saw of her in the "Making Of" special, I was not impressed. In fact I was horrified. But I am sure she was just holding back for the big night. Still, I would feel a bit more comfort if Williams would go on YouTube and search "Sandy Duncan Peter Pan".
