"Don't shows get filmed for promotional reasons? Why don't they just relseas that on iTunes or something?"
They aren't directed for filming, though. There are almost always changes in staging, lighting and direction for these filmed for tv productions. Also, there are restrictions on how much can be filmed, based on negotiated union rules. Those recordings aren't generally commercial quality.
I personally don't think this production is worthy...the original would be more appealing to watch on dvd. This productions comes across more like a staged concert, and for that you can get the London cast, which had a pre-West End concert on BBC.
Compared to most of the crap that's on TV I think this production is quite worthy to be filmed. I wish the practice of filming Broadway productions was more accepted and prevalent. Imagine if there was a cable channel that showed nothing but videos of now closed Broadway shows. I'd watch it all the time. Updated On: 1/5/10 at 11:26 AM

And it still comes down to most of the "crap" on television is cheaper to film than a Broadway show. Why do you think there are so many reality series today? It's because they are dirt cheap to produce. Maybe to film a stage production you don't need writers, but you do need to get the rights, which does cost money.
Plus, there are just some shows that don't work or look good on film.

I know it's not for DVD release, but it's a last-minute filming of the show. I'd like to know what everyone who bitched so mean-spiritedly at LesMiz24601 has to say now.
Amelia -- for a less "twatty" answer: The Lincoln Center films for their archives. They do this for almost every show they can schedule. You need to get special permission to view these shows (research, mostly). These are not filmed in the manner you would need to for any sort of release. There is NO intent to release this.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
