Phase 3- Broadway Reopens?

New York, similar to other states, has a four stage reopening process. Movie theatres, entertainment venues, etc will be in phase 4. Currently, no area in New York is ready for phase 4, and a few areas are in phase 3. Even if Broadway would be cleared to open, that doesn't mean that they will. The producers, Actor's Equity, Broadway League and theatre owners won't unless it is safe for the cast, crew, and audience members.

I understand wanting Broadway to reopen, truly I do. However it is not going to be a quick process, nor is there any guarantee that any of the upcoming shows (including Music Man) are going to open after the closure. Those in New York have worked hard to decrease and flatten the curve, and as a whole country we are just getting through what appears to be the first of two waves. There is a long way to go before theatre will be open, and no guarantee Spring 2021 will be the date. When Broadway does reopen it will take weeks of preparation with the need to redo the tech, sound, update costume fittings, potential re-castings, set building and tear down etc. Personally January 2021 is the absolute earliest they will begin reopening and I don't really see it opening prior to that.

Jordan is correct. Understand, though, that Phase 4 is still a phase and though in broad terms is expected to include added places of assembly the specifics have never been articulated and in any case it does not mean that social distancing and masks will not still be ongoing. Also note that the unions have to be satisfied before anyone goes back to work (and if you need a cautionary tale, you need look no further than what has happened in the last 24 hours with baseball, 7 players on 3 teams testing positive and all facilities across the sport closed down until further notice). Bottom line: no one has a clue when Broadway will reopen except that it will not be in 2020.

Did anyone ask you to research and list the counties? I must have missed that request. And WNY is not Phase 4 next Friday, it is the beginning of the following week if all goes well.

No, I'm not. I live in WNY and we entered Phase 3 this past Monday. That means the earliest we could enter Phase 4 is Mon 6/29. The ignorance of your post could be avoided with a simple search:

Also, people keep forgetting that even in a phase 4, NYC will have to keep itself safe from the "outside world" because when tourists flood our streets from places that are hot spots, that can take us back to how we were two months ago. So things like theaters, sporting events, anything involving large crowds that would draw hoards of people just won't be happening, even if our numbers here were at zero.

The real goal that has to be reached for Broadway isn't, as others have explained well, what phase NYC is in, but when the various unions all okay a return. And, even when that bridge is crossed, the time it will take to get shows up based on a myriad of casting/employment issues and technical specs that must be taken care of first.

I agree we're looking at Spring 2021 at the earliest. I think summer of that year might be closer to the mark.

Theaters are super spreader environments. No one wants to contract coronavirus regardless of treatment options later. (Hospitals first? ICUs?) There are very good treatments for leprosy. A vaccine only or wait it out.

Broadway and off-Broadway will not open in phase 4, but it will be interesting to see if some of the smaller off-off-Broadway theatres (some of which have less than 50 person capacity) start trying to reopen. Most of them are entirely non-union so don't have to worry about them. That will sort of be the first test of can theatre function post-covid.
