Stage version has LOTS of interaction with audience--Leading Player talks directly to Audience, audience sing-along to "It's Time to Start Living. . . etc."
Also, the MAGNICIENT stage sets used in original production would be most likely be substitued in Film for "more realistic" location settings.
But then ago, who knows? I never thought they could make CHICAGO into a film!!! :)

I'm wondering how this show will do as a concert. The success of the show was all due to Bob Fosse's incredible choreography. Without that, having seen a number of amateur and high school productions of Pippin, it's not much of a show

Not only the Fossee choreography, but take away the gimmicky sets and visual effects and what do you have?
A ho-hum score with not ONE hit song tied to a plot that confuses even people with a Doctorate in Medieval History.
PIPPIN's original run was "forced" by slick TV ad campaign (which featured Vereen MONTHS after he left show--one of the firsy examples of mass media selling a Broadway show as a product just like laundry detergent.)
But wait a minute, I got on my soapbox already today! :)
I'll be quiet now.

I remember that commercial -- Ben Vereen with two dancers doing "The Manson Trio" ..... very sexy.

This is amazing to read everyone's thoughts on the show...I'm having a great time seeing people's opinions and a lot of the thoughts being discussed are definitely influencing casting.
But...you can trust that we are being rather creative with some of our casting. And as said in the recent press release, we have Andy Blankenbuehler choreographing, and for those of you that know his work, you'll see that this is more than just the score and script being read aloud.
I do hope you all enjoy it as we nail down a lot of the final pieces in the coming weeks. And I hope you all come and see it!!!

Jamie-Are you going to use the original script and score or are you going to use the updated version that appeared at the Paper Mill a few years ago?
Also if our discusions of casting are having any influence at all, here is my dream cast Pippin-Michael Arden Leading Player-Raul Fastrada-Bebe Neuworth Berthe-Angela Lansbury Charles-Nathan Lane Catherine-Sutton Foster

Those are all fantastic ideas and with the exception of Nathan Lane as Charles, they are all thoughts we have had throughout the casting process...and however different our outcomes may be, I think you'll be happy with the results. To warn you though, there will more than likely be some casting you won't quite be able to agree with right off, but when you see the show, you'll see they were the right decisions.
Also...thanks for the Raul pick for Leading Player...but as you know, it won't be happening...

John T for Pippin! Angela or Carol for Berthe. I LOVE Angela, but Carol could be PERFECT.

Hey All! I'm new to the board but have been reading for quite some time. Question...(if anyone knows) Will John Rubenstein be making an appearance at the benefit??
I know that Cheyenne Jackson will be in it, but that's all I've heard. Has anyone thought of casting a crazy girl as the Leading Player? That would bring about all kinds of publicity! I have a friend that did it a while ago and apparantley she just wailed the crap out of that score.
Lord, I really hope that I can get a ticket to this thing because I do absolutely adore Pippin and I also la-la-love Billy Porter and Darius de Haas (and I really hope Porter is singing "Magic to Do" because I can already hear his opening "ooohs"). Interesting casting with Charles Busch as Berthe. I can kinda see it. Is he going to be in drag? I'm assuming/hoping so. There is nothing like La Busch done up. Terrance Mann seems perfection as Charlie... perfect mix of humor and menace. Any casting for Louis? I can totally see John Hill or Cheyene Jackson in this role (both I think are a little too big and hunky for Pippin who has always struck as more on the skinny side). I'm sure Julia Murney will be fabulous as Fastrada but part of me wishes that someone who can highkick to heaven was playing the role. My dream Fastrada's are Jane Krakowski (who may or not be able to still kick up her heels) or Emily Skinner (who isn't really a dancer at all but I can just hear her being absolutely delicious in this role). No word on Catherine or Pippin yet? Harumph, harumph. I guess Micheal Arden or Gavin Creel or one of those other Broadway pretty boys (whom I do adore) will be fine. Sutton Foster would be a good Catherine but she seems a little too headstrong for the role. I dunno. Anyways, enough late night drunken ramblings. Please, let the tickets go on sale soon so I can snatch a cheap-o deap-o ticket and actually be able to see this thing!!

I actually see Emily more as a Catherine (or maybe some day waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay into the future, Berthe, haha). She's too... girly... brassy though she may be.
I think Jane has more of a Catherine feel, too... a bit too sweet looking (it's that kwepie doll face, ya know?). Though, she would put an interesting twist on Fastrada.
Billy Porter is just genius. Love him.

The best choice to play Pippin, in my opinion, would be Euan Morton. As for catherine, how about Kate Shindle. Just a thought.. Pippin needs a fresh look. Nothing against fosse, but I think the show could use a new take... we'll see.
playbill.com also announced that terrence mann would be charlamagne two weeks ago or so
