Jon - re: Black Johanna alternative lyrics - yes the entire wig making scene lyric was different. I wish I could remember what they said.

I don't know if Sondheim wrote it, but it worked well.

think of August when the trees were green

to give an example...

There's a funny lyric-change in Les miserables. i don't remember it exactly...
but i think...
if you'll notice in the OLC marius sings in "a heart full of love" : "oh god, for shame! i do not even know your name"
and without her saying her name he later sings: "cosette, cosette!!" which is kinda funny...

an altarnate lyrics was:
Marius: My name is Marius Pontmercy
Cosette: And mine's Cosette
Marius: Cosette, I don't know what to say

so that settles it.

As far as RENT goes, the original line in the NYTW production did refer to Jersey. However, that was deemed too offensive since many Jersey audiences would be attending the show. On tour, they can keep the original line, which is far funnier, since they are usually far from jersey.
=======================================

Joke's on them. I saw the tour twice in Jersey, and that was the biggest laugh of the show. I'd actually just assumed they changed the lyric to match whatever state they were in.

"The Circle Line is an obvious New York reference that most outside of NYC probably wouldn't get. Although, I think they left it in for the movie. I can't remember. "

Mark now doesnt even say either in the movie, He just states that there were tourists who got lost, and stated that Angel helped them get out of Allphabet City.

"Christine: Think of all the things we've shared and seen "

to "think of August when the trees were green ""

That is the 'new' lyrics of "Think Of Me" in TPOTO. I don't know exactly when the lyrics were changed and why, but when the show opened in Toronto, Canada, in 1989 they used these new lyrics of "Think Of Me".

I think there are two different versions of "He Wanted to Say" from Ragtime. I don't know the differences, though.

Maison des Lunes is completely different from the OBCR of Beauty and the Beast. I prefer the new version. (But that's partly because when I did the show with my school, we had this ridiculous dance we would do backstage during that song, but that's another story.)

Mark DOES in fact refer to the circle line in the movie.

A lot of songs in Ragtime were changed between Toronto concept recording and the Broadway CD.

Dean: Can I tell you something? Lorraine: That depends on what it is. Dean: I think you're really really pretty. Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.

oklahoma has an alternate version of "loney room" that is kinda a poor choice on roger's and hammerstein's part

normal version;
"and her long yeller hair falls across my face..."
brunette laurey version;
"and her long matted hair..."

to me the alternate one just sounds kinda nasty (matted isn't exactly a flattering description of cleanliness)

I would like to thank the multiple upon multiple viewings of "One Fine Day" for providing me with the knowledge of the Circle Line before I ever even cared about New York.

There were three.

The one on the OLC, then "Little God of My Heart," which opened Broadway and Toronto, and finally, the reprise of "This is the Hour," which was added in 1995.

Actually that is only partially right, in terms of the alternate Miss Saigon lyrics. There have actually been 4 different versions of the song.

When the show was in previews/rehearsal process in London, Kim sang a song called "Too Much For One Heart," which was essentially a reprise melody of "Please." Then when the show opened in London and they made the cast recording, the song was called "Sacred Bird." This song followed the simple melody that is found throughout the musical.

When the show moved to Broadway the song had been changed to a song called "Little God of My Heart." I saw the musical at this time, but I was like 4 or 5 so I don't remember this song at all.
Finally, they changed the scene/song one last time to what is now called the Finale, which is a reprise of "This is the Hour," and yes, was added in 1995.

There have also been a lot of changed along the way to the musical in general. Specifically Ellen's song, "Now That I've Seen Her," which I believe was originally titled, "It's Her or Me."

Miss Saigon is my favorite show...don't know if that's obvious.

In the National Theatre production of 'Oklahoma!', they had "long tangled hair" in 'Lonely Room'. Essentially, it's not that different from "matted", but it sounds much more romantic somehow, and MUCH nicer than "yeller". :3

We aren't forgetting alternative lyrics for 'I Can Do Better Than That' ('The Last 5 Years'), are we? It changed from "met a guy in a class I was taking who you might say looked like Tom Cruise" to "met a guy in a class I was taking with some very well-placed tattoos". Change mostly made because Tom Cruise needs to be considered a major hunk for the line to work properly, but the majority think of him as an unstable strange-person at this stage. ^_^

I thought "Too Much For One Heart" was never actually in a staged incarnation of the show.
