Itunes is definitely being weird with it. It made me update to the latest version, which I didn't want to do, before it would let me buy it. It's never made me update my itunes when purchasing a movie in the past.
I'm actually embarrassed to say that I didn't know it came out today...:)
But I'm going to rush to Barnes and Noble sometime soon and try to find it.
"Rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
-Neil Patrick Harris
According to Broadway.com (yay, reliable sources - lol), there's a featurette where someone takes you on a 'special tour' of Mimi's fire escape - "All the way to new heights!"
"Union Square is sold out now too. I wonder why there is such a big shortage!"
I don't think the stores have been stocking it with a lot of copies. When I checked Best Buy's website in the morning, ebery store had it. By the time I got to one only one store on Long Island had any left in stock. Virgin in Times Square only had Blu-Ray (and I don't think they had many copies) and when I went to the Virgin in Union Square they also only had Blu-Ray. There was space on the shelf for the regular DVD, but there weren't any. Clearly stores have underestimated the demand for this.
"I have a blu-rey on a non HD TV and I notice a difference."
I never said there wasn't a difference. What I said was that there isn't a significant difference for MOST people so the format will have a long way to go before it ever replaces DVDs, especially since most people have no real reason to get one. DVD had HUGE advantages over VHS: They were less bulky, didn't deteriorate, better sound, and they offered extras, which couldn't be placed on VHS copies. The rapid decline is cost of DVD players accelerated to where it was cheaper to buy a DVD player than a VHS player. Blu-Ray is really just a next generation DVD with no real added benefits to the average consumer...the players still are extremely expensive and the discs are expensive too. This one won't replace DVDs anytime soon, unless the studios simply stop selling movies on regular dvds.
the entire DVD is done beautifully and with so much care to preserve Rent. I'm so happy they did this, and it absolutely erases the bad taste left from the motion picture of Rent.
I think its interesting that Spring Awakening is always compared to RENT. Its often attemped to be put on par with RENT. Considdering the impact that RENT had as it crossed over into pop culture and mainstreem media in such a way that Broadway hadn't in a long time, I considder it such a misleading comparrison. If it had been on par with RENT, Spring Awakening would probably have had a better chance at still running to this day.
I love Spring Awakening but yeah--I don't see the connection. I DO hope that the success of this (at least the initial cinecast--I assume the DVD will be a mild success) will encourage more shows to be filmed and released though in general.
As for AMazon in the UK only selling the Blu Ray isn't that because, if the region code is fine, Blu Ray can be either NTSC or PAL (or in a sense is neither/both) so will work in the UK but for many the NTSC normal DVD won;t?
They had it at Toys R Us! Shocking- bought the last two copies- one for me and one for my mom as a gift.
Totally agree with you EricMontreal!....not the same... if you ask me, compare spring awakening to BARE- had BARE not been effed over the producers, people would have called Spring Awakening the poor man's BARE- much in the way of dirty rotten scoundrels followed the producers.
I do think both Bare and Spring Awakening would not exist if it weren't for the popularity of Rent and the existence of a successful youth oriented rock musical on Broadway at that time. So in that I think they owe a bit of debt to Rent, but the comparisons are needless.
Although I live in Palm Springs, I was pleasantly surprised to find it at my WalMart today. It was only $19.96. I just finished watching it and was blown away. I thought the whole cast was amazing. Amazing chemistry between them all, as well.I felt so much more into it emotionally, then when I first saw the movie version. Bravo to the director, and technical crew.
I finally got the chance to watch this and have to say I was "underwhelmed." Will Chase (at close to 40) looks ridiculous next to Adam Kantor who I am guessing is in his early twenties. Much of the criticism leveled at the film version was that the original cast of the B-way production were all too old to recreate their roles. At least they looked like they belonged together. As we all know, the camera is unmerciful. Much of the closing cast of this show looked far too old to be playing these parts.
I justified away Will's age as "looks rough from the whole kicking the drugs thing" the only filmed cast member I have issue with is Telly Leung(sp?) who has an awkward singing voice in some spots.
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
The ages of the actors in this video didn't bother me. I was actually SHOCKED to find out Renne Elise Goldsberry was as old as she is.
The thing is - if the movie had HALF the excitement, urgency and just outright fun of this filmed performance, their ages wouldn't have been an issue. It's just the fact that the movie was already sunk by its weak screenplay, limp direction and stupefyingly slow pace. Updated On: 3/5/09 at 12:29 PM
