There has been some chatter lately that the NY City Center production of Ragtime directed by Lear deBessonet,  could be transferring to the Vivian Beaumont theatre this coming fall. From what I know it sounds like it will probably happen. It most certainly could run for a while and receive multiple Tony nominations.

I'd love Ragtime to be on Broadway again but I hope the design elements get huge upgrades for the transfer.

I highly doubt it. The last revival flopped, and there’s no reason to believe this one will do any better.

Let’s be real, Joshua Henry’s Tony has been engraved since he was cast in the Encores production last May.

And apparently there will be a full production value, not another concert staging.

Well, I’ll be. That bird really did it.

It sort of clocks because Lear is the new artistic director of Lincoln Center Theatre.

Oh goody. We can witness the same conversations about this potential transfer in a new thread.

I’m pretty sure this is beyond a potential transfer Steve.

Keep Henry and Uranowitz.   Please lose deBessonett, concert version or not.  Give us a more capable director or directors to pull off a first class production.

Oh sure- the new incoming artistic director of Lincoln Center Theatre, who has chosen this to be the first major production of her new tenure, after getting almost entirely rave reviews for it when she was artistic director of Encores (and after also having a gigantic hit with the Broadway transfer of her Into the Woods two years earlier), is going to keep the cast but replace herself when this moves. That’s EXACTLY what’s going to happen.

Can we get Dear World at the Newhouse while we’re at it?

It’s always hard to tell from the audience POV but listening to actors and directors speak over the year it would be unwise to assume that the only good thing about Ragtime is the performances and not the direction. Directors appear to have all different styles but there are some strong directors that very much shape the actors’ performances. For example, Alice Ripley described Michael Greif working incredibly closely with her to tune the details of her performance to make it ‘perfect’. She did not take credit for all the ideas.

You can also look at experiments to see the effect of director - for example, look at Patti LuPone’s Mrs Lovett by Lonny Price vs John Doyle. They were completely and utterly different.

Therefore I think it would be unfair to dismiss the director of Ragtime because of the staging. For all we know the performances achieved what they did because of her. And if you look at the ‘into the woods’ production there were also some amazing performances too. It could be a coincidence but it may not be.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Curious about casting for this, if it is indeed happening since Caissie Levy I assume is tied to Lost Boys...

Ragtime was a fine musical to see at Encores but not sure how much widespread appeal it has.

I'd be perfectly fine if Levy was replaced.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
