Cyrano trailer
Doesn’t seem to pull the usual “hide that it’s a musical” trailer tricks.

That was lovely! Not only am I happy that MGM is doing a large scale movie musical for the first time in years, but from the looks of things, Joe Wright is trusting the fact that it's a musical. Not to mention how stunning the production design and cinematography are. Between this and West Side Story, it makes me glad that those two lavish movie musicals are going to open in the exact same month.

Didn't realize this was such a big budget movie! Joe Wright! That's cool. It def. sold me. I'm excited to see it. Looks gorgeous.

Several thoughts:
(1) Overall this looks better than I expected. Looking forward to it!
(2) It looks like they’re now going to make specific references to Peter Dinklage’s height being part of the character, which I think is good. It was really awkward the way they kind of half-committed to it in the stage-version. I have no problem with little people playing roles that have nothing to do with their height (Dinklage has done it before, quite well), but the nature of the character is such that it’s awkward to leave it as an elephant in the room, while making one stray reference to the size of his nose – without even putting a prosthetic on him.
(3) But what the hell was with that group number with all the men singing? It sounded terrible. I can imagine that maybe it’s deliberate in the movie – like a humorous scene of all the men trying sing romantically but sounding bad. But if so, it’s weird that they featured it so prominently in the trailer.
(4) I know Haley Bennet played the role first, but I wish they had cast Jasmine Cephas-Jones instead. Sounds like Bennett is not as strong a singer as Cephas-Jones.

I agree that the song choices weren't the greatest, which is odd, but I'm still excited to see it. I like Wright's directing.

Interesting. Roxanne (Haley Bennett) and Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) are shown singing in the trailer, but not Cyrano (Peter Dinklage).
My pet peeve about period films: When actors don't sound like they're in the same time and place. Bennett and the actress playing her mother have accents that sound British, but Harrison and Dinklage sound so contemporary and American. (The art direction, however, looks Oscar-worthy.)

Is this the same cast seen Off-Broadway?

No, Dinklage is the only cast member in common with the Off-Broadway production - but Haley Bennett did play Roxanne onstage with him in the out-of-town production.

From what we've seen since, it appears the movie is centering "Someone to Say" as their big single from the movie:

Combine this with the praise Dinklage received for his performance from festivals, and I imagine the song choice for the movie has less to do with trepidation over his singing and more to do with trying to find the most commercially optimal song for use in advertising.

Yep, he and Bennett are the only ones to reprise their roles while everyone else is brand new.

‘Cyrano’ Qualifies for Unusual Best Original Score Oscar
In part:
"Joe Wright’s “Cyrano,” starring Peter Dinklage and Hayley Bennett, based on the 2018 stage musical by Erica Schmidt (derived from the classic French play of unrequited love from Edmond Rostand), has surprisingly qualified for Best Original Score Oscar consideration. That’s because brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner, of the folk group The National, composed an original score separate from their theatrical score. Additionally, the Dessners reworked the songs for the movie as well, with lyrics from National frontman Matt Berninger and his wife Carin Besser.
Plus, “Cyrano” boasts two new Oscar-contending original songs: “Every Letter,” sung by Bennett, and “Somebody Desperate” (appearing over the end credits), an all-Nationals collaboration sung by Berninger, who wrote with Bryce and Aaron."

This is rather interesting that a musical film adaptation does qualify for an Original Score nomination. I do know there used to be a separate award for "Scoring of a Musical Picture", which is why Alfred Newman's work on films like The King and I and Camelot won Oscars for his amazing arrangement work.
It will be more fascinating once the movie comes out and how the reviews will compare it to West Side Story since these two musical movies are coming out in December.

I have been eagerly awaiting this since it was announced, I missed seeing the stage version, and it finally came out this weekend. I gotta say, I loved it from start to finish. It felt pretty much tailor made to my enjoyment (right down to a cameo from my favorite musician). Will absolutely be watching this again.

The TV network promos I have seen do not feature the characters singing. I forgot it is a musical.

Saying 'it was better on stage' is not normally that big of a dig but that just tells you how bad this movie is. in my opinion cats is a masterpiece compared to this. Katy Perry is the trailer because the live singing capture is atrocious

I actually like The National and having caught Cyrano directed by Jamie Lloyd I assumed I was going to love this and oh yeah directed by Joe Wright who is a genius I went in super excited - ummm, I couldnt even finish it.

Yeah, it's completely dismissable. Dinklage can be an earthy, seductive presence but he's all wrong for Cyrano. Wright is a journeyman director at best--he's completely at sea here, forever filling the screen with extras and livestock as if that's going to solve anything.
