Dear fanadu, that is what people were bitching about for the last million posts of this thread...
And on that note, could we please stop bitching?

It's fascinating for me to actually fathom that RENT has closed. As I reflect back on it, I have come to realize that for me it has perfectly represented a time period (the 90s) in a way that I have not seen paralleled. Like all things that are quality, it has/and will stand the test of time. Just as the classic sitcom "Roseanne: perfectly embodied the 80s for the middleclass, RENT has done the same for artists during the 90s. Similarily "Roseanne" ended her 9 year run with these famous words from a Walt Whitman poem, and I feel it is only appropriate to revisit them again tonite. "Into that good night I go..."
R.I.P. RENT (The heart may freeze, or it may burn, there is no future, there is past, i live this moment as my last...)
i'm going thru the photos now, but to answer everyones question, Idina, Taye and Adam were not there. Everyone else was...
wow.
get over yourselves!
you're going to burn 3 actors, at the stake, because they had other engagements???
please.

That homeless guy outside the Nederlander is so interesting. I myself will miss this show. Where will all the Rentheads go?
I agree that no former cast members are obligated to go back, and that is their choice, or maybe their schedule making that decision for them. Besides, maybe some of these people had nothing but bad memories from the show. We don't know because we don't personally know them. Of course for publicity people are not going to say, "Oh the show sucks, I hated being part of the cast," etc, etc...
And honestly, has any other show gotten the hype for closing like Rent has? The only other I can think of a bit is Cats, but that got a Great Performances and recording filmed in London, so I honestly don't know if things were the same.

I'd say the original closing of A Chorus Line in 1990 had much similar hype.. but those were the days before the internet. There is video of some of it somewhere. Over 6000 performances will do that for ya :)
But much like a lot of other shows that ran for a long time, it was time for it to close.
It kind of just hit me that it is no longer at the Nederlander, which is sad, in a way... but Lepetite it right.
We have the tour to look forward to.

Did 'Les Miserable' get this type of hype?
Wicked closing will be the apocalypse of Broadway.
I would guess that Phantom will be insane too, whenever that eventually closes. However, I have not heard of that show having weird fans.
LePetiteFromage, that's exactly what my brother said. I woke up this morning and said to him, "Wow, RENT is closed." And he said, "Only on Broadway!" all cheery. Made me smile a bit.

marianne 2, when phantom closes it won't be a huge do deal because it doesn't have a fan base like rent, but wicked does That closing will be worse then rent
I still don't understand why Phantom makes the money that it does... why do all the tourists go see it?! But stupidbeans is right about that. It doesn't have the fanbase that RENT does. I dunno about Wicked. I mean I know there are the crazies out there who think it's the greatest show on earth, but I wonder if it speaks to them the way RENT has spoken to a generation. And I'm not saying that to try to sound like a newspaper editorial or something. I was there last night. I heard the stories. It really changes lives, mine included.

for the first 7 years, people were seeing it because it was really good, then people were like, Cats Has Been On Broadway for a long time so we will see his other show, then it was Hey this show has been on broadway for ever so we'll see it

I was looking at the pics and am I seeing it wrong or does Wilson have a skirt on? Kendra looks cute in her pic with Jai Rodriguez.
I'm one of the crazies who thinks that Wicked is a great show but not the greatest show on earth.
No, you're seeing correctly. Wilson did have a skirt on. I'm calling it a kilt to preserve any last shred of masculinity... He did have a woman hanging off of him when he walked past everyone with his bodyguard...
Why is it with all the Rentheads on this board, I cannot find a single review from last night on this board? Am I not seeing something?

none of us went to the final performance could it was totally sold out
Me too, RENT totally turned me into a theater geek And isn't that a good thing?
Last night, my son managed to get in the theater when the show was letting out and he found a Playbill. When one of the crew saw him, they let him come up on stage and look around! He came home with the flyers from "Roger's" band that were thrown in the trash and a guitar pick. Totally awesome way to end the night!
It is funny; I have seen the show so many times, and I was fine with the show closing, but while I am reading, I am actually sad that it closed. Thank you Rent!
