From http://www.mcctheater.org/shows/11-12_season/revisitingcarrie/

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of MCC Theater’s upcoming production of Carrie. The show’s creators - bookwriter Lawrence D. Cohen, composer Michael Gore and lyricist Dean Pitchford, along with director Stafford Arima - will discuss the exciting process of revisiting and reimagining this legendary musical. Throughout the evening, Molly Ranson (Carrie), Marin Mazzie (Carrie’s mother, Margaret), and other cast members will perform song selections for a taste of what’s to come this January, when Carrie returns to the stage anew.

Grabbing desperately for any shred of logic here, I suppose if we can have Spider-Man 2.0, we might as well have Carrie 2.0.
enjoy...

I'd pay 40 dollars to see Mazzie, Ranson, and Olivo belt out the hits from Carrie.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

This show has always been a guilty pleasure of mine: I have both the NY and London casts and a... uhm... video. I've even had the pleasure of designing it for production that ultimately went nowhere when one of the original creative team put the brakes on it. I'm thrilled they're bringing it back, but let's hope that this time, they'll rachet down the really awful 80s overlay that covered ever song like a pair of badly made leg warmers.

And please: no cardboard cars!!!

"And please: no cardboard cars!!!"

Don't worry, there won't be room for them.

The Lortel stage is pretty small and there is virtually no wing space and very little "backstage," which will probably be taken up by their band. Seussical a few years back was stretching that stage to its limit, and that was a cast of 12. I'm curious how many they are planning to have in the actual production.

I will be going! ROW 2 BITCH!!! Oh and the theatre will be fine. MCC is a smart company. If CARRIE couldn't fit in the theatre, they'd know. I'm sure they have a special trick up their sleeves. They probably have more in store for the show after the Broadway revival. Maybe a transfer to a larger theatre and they could expand more. I'm not too concerned with the sets or wing space, but it's the prom scene I'm worried about. But they will pull it off. They wouldn't do it if they couldn't.

I'll also be there, in row two actually too...if anyone wants to say hi I'm a tallish thin young-looking Australian....I guess that's not too descriptive. But it's interesting to think that a few of you will be there :P.

Christy Altomare (who originated Wendla on the first national tour of SPRING AWAKENING) played Sue Snell, the role Jenn Diamano played in the first reading, in the most recent workshop.

I wouldn't be surprised if she's among those continuing on to the full production.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

They performed "In", "Carrie", a new duet between Sue and Tommy called "You Shine" or something of the sort, "Carrie" (reprise) and "When There's No One". Disappointing that there was no "Eve was weak" or "Evening Prayers".

I haven't really listened to audios of the readings, only the soundboard OBC so I don't really know if the changes are new for this performance or were in readings (I'm guessing readings)

I was really, really impressed/shocked with "In". It sounds very contemporary, kind of more Spring Awakening-ish...I like the lyrics and how they are both taunting Carrie and worried about their own insecurities..Apparently the song was truncated and it will be a much longer opening song that sets up Carrie's story and the characters etc.....in the discussion they also said the show is to be set "Now" (As opposed to say 1980s), which I think is a good idea and with the style of the music now seems like will work fine.

Molly is such a small presence on the stage physically compared to the others, which is interesting. I feel like Linzi would have been 'bigger' in the role (I don't mean just weight-wise) and her song, but because she is the outsider taunted girl who is very timid in the movie (haven't read the book) I guess it fits. The director made a comment about how Molly and Marin are primarily 'actors' and I guess you can see that they both do 'act', e.g. Molly seeming vulnerable and crying and becoming happier at the end of the song etc.

I also liked "You Shine", which (if a little bland) kind of talked about Sue/Tommy's relationship, how it isn't 'shallow' and how much they think the other one "shines". At the end of this song there is spoken lines where sue says {after Tommy says he loves her} that it is the first time she heard it and "that's what she remembers most about that day". In the discussion they said the musical would now reflect more the book and its fragments of like diary entries and police reports and things or the like (again I haven't read it), I suspect this line might show an example of this. I.e. Sue is telling some of the story?

I love Marin Mazzie. Her Carrie (reprise) and especially When There's No One were pretty touching...I guess if you have seen her in next to normal you can imagine how she handles the vulnerability and crying etc...

I wish, wish they did "And Eve was Weak", but no.

I assume it won't just be a keyboard and drums in the actual production, which would help the title song seem more forceful etc.. imo.

The discussion was interesting, was a bit of scape goating on the original director. Interestingly Bob Fosse was in talks with them to direct at one stage??

10 songs are apparently cut, 14 new.

The night was very convincing that a Carrie revival will work. I hope I get to see it even though it seems unlikely.

Can you let us know who was in the cast besides Ranson and Mazzie?

I know Matthew James Thomas, the matinee Peter Parker/Spider-Man in SMTotD, was in the cast - not sure on others.

Just being devil's advocate here and reminding everyone that the original workshop in 1985 made the material *feel* like it would work as well - the real test will be if they can make this show, with its supernatural effects work when its fully staged.

Still fun to hear that the evening made the revisal seem promising. Can't wait.

The rest of the cast was Christy Altomare, Corey Boardman, Blair Goldberg, F. Michael Haynie, Derek Klena, Andy Mientus, AnnMarie Milazzo, Jen Sese, Jeanna de Waal, and Adrienne Warren.

I wish they delved just a touch more into how they felt about the cult status of the show and how that affected their feelings about revisiting it. They sort of brushed the original production aside, laying the blame pretty squarely at the director's feet before admitting that they cut 10 songs and added 14 new ones. Which sounded, to me, like an admission that the material originally performed was less than optimal.

It was an interesting peek behind the curtain, but it didn't really feel terribly informative. Before tonight, the only song I was really familiar with was "Eve Was Weak." Which, sadly, was not performed. "In" felt a bit awkward--it might have been a sound issue, but the overlapping lyrics were difficult to understand, and something felt a touch off. But I'll withhold judgment and wait to see how it actually sounds when performed as intended. "You Shine" included dialogue that just didn't sound authentic to a teen voice, especially a contemporary teen voice. It made me very unsure of their decision to set the piece in a vaguely defined "now." Marin Mazzie was, as expected, wonderful. I just love her and find her enormously compelling. A few lines of what she performed felt a little Les Mis to me. I kept thinking, "where do I know this from?" And Molly Ranson was...fine. Didn't have a ton of spark in her solo, but again, I know that rehearsals for the show are months away.

I don't know. I didn't have any particularly strong expectations going in, but I guess I just wasn't any more (or less) interested after tonight. Basically, it's a great big: let's wait and see.

Yes, the evening was outstanding...and the creative team did make it seem like this production is really going to work. I am really looking forward to seeing this - and it made me love Marin Mazzie even more - her rendition of "When There's No One" was brilliant. Glad to hear others felt so positive about the evening as well.
