Really? This is scary.

Good point he brings up though. Who knows if any of these new musicals will still be running come April anyways.

This is hilarious. Last season, Riedel said on air that the show wouldn't get a single nomination. Now he's saying it's a contender for a Best Musical nod. Ok, new season, new competition, the scandal and schadenfreude subsided a bit, understood. but still...have things changed THAT much? This is one of his all-time greatest flip-flops.
Regardless of how the show is I want a bracelet made of wires and old spiderman costumes!
I think there have been worse shows up for a Tony, reNt comes to mind.

I think it will definitely get some technical nominations. I suppose it COULD be a contender for a Best Musical nomination (not win). I would hardly say that Paige is a shoo-in for a nomination though. I'm not saying he isn't good, just that the Supporting Actor category is much wider than the Best New Musical category...
I know I am in the extremely vast minority here in that I actually really enjoyed this show, and I definitely think it deserves some nods.
Things aren't nominated strictly based on their own merit. If there aren't enough quality new shows still playing, then it certainly could get nominated. (Remember, the Scottsboro Boys was quite an anomaly getting as many nods as it did.)
Sadly, I see his point. He's not saying it DESERVES to be nominated, just that it certainly could end up that way.
What other NEW shows will be eligibe, after all?
Bonnie & Clyde, Rebecca, Lysistrata Jones, Ghost, (possibly) Newsies... I can see Spiderman getting nominated if only so that they can perform again and raise ratings.
I have trouble believing anything Ridel says. Do keep in mind the fact that the was the guy that said that the Hair revival was not going to come to Broadway. He then said that Spider-Man will not make it to opening night, and he said that the upcoming revival of Porgy and Bess was dead in the water in Boston. However, Hair did open, Spider-Man as well, and so far no news about Porgy and Bess other then its starting previews soon.

I agree. The guy will basically write anything, spread any rumor, doesn't care about any real truth, just whatever gets him attention. Does anyone take him seriously anymore?
Yes, people do.
And this seasons new musicals are shaping up to be
NEWSIES
NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT
REBECCA
GHOST
END OF THE RAINBOW
LYSISTRATA JONES
BONNIE & CLYDE
SPIDERMAN
So unless most of those are truly awful, I don't see SPIDEY grabbing the top nomination. Technically speaking it deserves one or two nominations (lighting, maybe) but that's about it.

To stop those monsters 1-2-3,
Here's a fresh new way that's trouble-free,
It's got Paul Anka's guarantee...
(Guarantee void in Tennessee.)
Just don't look! Just don't look!

Just don't look! Just don't look!
Speaking of, this year's Treehouse of Horror had a throwaway "Turn Off the Dark" gag. :)
I thought "End of the Rainbow" is being considered more of a play with music?
I don't know but END OF THE RAINBOW has once of the corniest titles I've heard since THE STORY OF MY LIFE.
I'm not sure why there's such a fuzz over Reidel's article, he clearly didn't have any material and created some column where he basically says SPIDER-MAN *might* be a Tony contender which really isn't that big of a deal and it's way too early in the season to tell. His Patrick Page comment was laughable though, as someone already said, Featured Actor in a Musical (and play) tends to be really crowded with good performances.
I want them to nominate Spider-Man for Best Direction of a Musical just to see the fireworks go off around here. Then I want them to win and Julie Taymor to give a big "eff you" speech to the crowd. I demand preening like a villainous luchador.

Even if it does get a nomination for Best Musical, I don't see it winning. I could see it easily grabbing Best Lighting, Best Scenic Design, and maybe Best Costume Design, though.
End of the Rainbow is a play with music ala Peter and the Starcatcher. I don't see it under Best Musical.
granted, the list is short this season for new musicals, but I'd say the 4 nominees would be: Ghost(front runner), Rebecca, Newsies & Nice Work.. Neither Lysistrata Jones nor Bonnie & Clyde will be around come the Tony Awards. Unless both Newsies & Nice Work fail to arrive this season, then maybe Spiderman gets nominated. Otherwise, no way.

Honestly, I feel the technical elements of the show SHOULD be recognized, as some of them are quite impressive, in my opinion. Some people hate the costume and set, but I dig them a great deal.
And Patrick Page should at least score a nomination. He's easily the best part of the show, which to many isn't saying much, but he manages to make the audience love and sympathize with a sadistic and potentially one-note character, and is far more engaging and entertaining than the leads.
I doubt he'd win, but I do want Page (who I saw play Iago in Washington, DC, where he was fantastic) to be recognized for the work he's doing in this piece.
And no, for the record, I am not a shill.
I'm rooting for Spidey for best scenic design. There were some epic scenes in there... besides the big baby being caught by the giant hand. SMH
Who knows... Bonnie & Clyde might have incredible lighting? lol
Things are not looking too good for Lysistrata and B&C.
But I'm still rooting for everyone!

I wouldn't count out Bonnie & Clyde, it got good (not great) reviews at La Jolla with most people saying Stark Sands was too gay to play Clyde. With Jeremy Jordan in the role and so many people swooning over his portrayal of Jack Kelly in Newsies, it might bring considerable buzz to the show. Plus Disney has repeatedly said Newsies is not headed to the great white way this season, more likely in the fall.
I didn't really care for the design of Newsies and thought the first act needed a lot of work. So I hope it gets some help before it makes it to Broadway.
