Ok, I posted this on Jera's "New Disney Musical" thread but I'd like to open this topic to it's own specific discussion. Now, there are no current plans so bring POCAHONTAS to Broadway, but I think it would honestly make a wonderful stage adaption. Just think of the effects and dancing that could be put into this show.
Now, when it comes to the title role, there's no one else I can think of to do this role than Sara Ramirez. She is a phenomenal singer and actress and she suits the part incredibly well. She looks and and can sing it.
Look at the picture above and listen to her singing "Colors of the Wind" at the link posted below and tell me she's not perfect for the part.

Amen to that!!!
I heard the clip. She's really very good, but to tell you the truth, I prefer Eden's better. She just sounds more like a Pocahontas. Sara's voice is very very pretty, but just not a Pocahontas type.
But I really really think that Pocahontas would be a great musical on Broadway.

Now, I'm not saying this role has to be played by a Native American actress, but are there any of those around Broadway at all?
Like I said, Sara's clip lacks a certain...aspect of something, but with some time with the role, I think she'll grow into it very well.

I didn't really like her version of "Colors of the Wind." I thought she was too weak on the high notes.
She does look the part though, more so than Eden Espinosa. But I think Eden's voice is more suited.
Well, I don't know when this was recorded but she has a VERY powerful voice. She can really belt those high notes. I think she just took a lighter approach when she sung it. But, if you've seen SPAMALOT you'll know that she can belt those notes with power with NO PROBLEM.
I'd really love to see something come of this.

apdarcey, is the link not working?
Where has Eden sung it?
I've been a huge fan of Ramirez' long before SPAM so this is not meant in a bad way but I have to say, she'd need to trim down to play a role like Pocahontas. She's a big woman. Not a great picture you've got of her.
Sara's "Colors of the Wind" is on the "Steven Schwartz Album" which was released in the late 1990s. I prefer Judy Kuhn's version. I've never heard Eden's though.

From what I can tell..she doesn't look FAT...but she has big..muscular arms...
:runs:
She's gorgeous. And is not a big woman at all. This is a recent picture.

Heaven forbid she doesn't look like a toothpick. People do realize the waist sizes of Disney characters are anatomically impossible, right?
Exactly. She looks, acts, and sings the part beautifully. I hope, if they ever try to bring this to Broadway, that she is considered.
Doesn't the Disney version neglect the fact that Pochahontas was 13 or so when the action actually happened, and that John Smith raped her...
This is one adaptation that I actually wouldn't mind seeing at all. I agree that the effects, dancing etc in this could be phenomenal if done right and Sara Ramirez has a beautiful voice.
Right on.
Sara Ramirez would be perfection in this role.
Could be the fact that I saw her last night in Spamalot.... XD But I'd buy tickets to see her as Pocahontas, most definitely. Such a powerful voice!
Oh god no! No Eden Espinosa as "Pocahantas". I don't want to hear her screaming the majority of the score.
BobbyBubby, it isn't an autobiographical account it's a fictional adaptation of the legend of Pocahantas.
