not at all I can't wait to see a a fresh new take on Fantine. I was suprised when I read Daphne's name but the more and more I play around with the thought in my mind the more I see it. I am biased because I'm a big fan but I think she'll be great.
RIP Natasha Richardson. ~You were a light on this earth ~
"Mimi" is not playing Fantine, the actress Daphne Rubin-Vega is. Daphne is a great actress who plays deep and complex emotions very well. She is stunning in playing heartbreak and pathos. She will be a mesmerizing Fantine. Check out her work in the movie 'Virgin'. She is a phenomenal talent in so many ways and a primal and powerfully emotive force in the acting world.

Yes but RENT is pathos and Le Mis is pathos. I don't really see why it is a stretch to see Daphne in the part. And you did use the word SCARED. That's a strong word and a little on the "diss"ing side.

I am a bit scared. Les Mis is my favorite musical ever and I wasn't overly impressed with Daphne's voice in RENT. RENT's sound is very different from Les Mis.
It shouldn't be scary...it will just be different. I think Daphne will do her best to pull Fantine off...and if she can't, I give her credit for trying something new.

Well I don't think she will sound the same as in RENT. I love the fact that it won't be just a carbon copy of the original. She'll bring a freshness and a whole new level to the peice I hope.

Amen, BettyBoy72 sista.
americanboy99, you ought to edit your thread title. And "scared" is an odd choice of words. Can you please elaborate on what you're "scared" of regarding Ms. Rubin-Vega's upcoming portrayal of Fantine?

Well there's all different types of voices on stage and hers is among them. I think there was a thread about the topic of singing in theatre and what it takes to be a good theatre actor.
I think Daphne's got the acting chops and a great voice. Granted she won't sound like Ruthie Henshall or Elaine Paige, but I think she emotes well and will have folks bawling their eyes out.

I was making a comparison of Mimi to Fantine, not in any way saying anything bad about Ms. Vega.
And... it is a question to everyone. I am a little scared. When I think about preformers like Ruthie Henshall and others who have sung this part it just seems rather weird.
"Scared" and "weird" are terms born out of lack of knowledge and fear of the unknown; neither of which should be ruminated about in review of, and certainly not in anticipation of, a theater performance.

Americanboy, I know you are not attacking Daphne, but your post seems short-sighted. You're basically saying that because DR-V does not "seem like Fantine" to you because she is for example, not like Ruthie Henshall, then you are "scared." It is rather close-minded to think that way. Maybe you should just enjoy the opportunity to see DR-V in a completely different show, especially since you claim to like her. And why would you compare Mimi to Fantine. That's like saying Patti Lupone can't play Ms. Lovett becuase she was so likable in "Noises Off". We are talking about actors here, they have the ability to re-invent as a new character and even train their voices in new ways to take on new parts and vocal challenges. Would anyone have seen Charlize Theron playing Aileen Wournos? Nope, but it was a damn fine performance. I want to be clear I am not attacking you. I respect your ideas, I'm just nudging you a little. :)

Yes, actually I am. Not because of her ability, it's just that she is SOOOO very different from all the other Fantines. Plus I have never been a fan of hers.

Daphne doesn't always sound as scratchy and rough like she did on the RENT and Rocky Horror cast recordings. Those are rock scores, and on her albums she's singing rock music. She has a very diverse voice and I'm sure that while it will still be very much her own unique sound, I believe she's got a bit of a classical side that will really show through with this show.

I have heard some REALLY bad Fantine's in the past (including the Australian chick on the Complete Cast Recording) This role is different for Daphne, and to be honest I would have NO desire to see this production if she wasn't in it. I was a little miffed when I found out she was playing Fantine, because now I have to save up a crapload of money and fly to NYC to see it. I love her and everything she does, and even if she sounds bad, she's still a joy to watch on stage. She was amazing in Rent, and I think she'll be amazing in this.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
I think the choice to cast her in this role is so exciting. She's a wonderful actress, and I can't wait to see her take on the role. For me, it's the biggest thing to look forward to in this "revival."

OK, so:
Different = Scared
Sounds like you were raised just perfectly by American pop culture. We should fear anything that is unlike what we already know, before we even see it; rather than embrace and explore it once we have seen it. You must fit in perfectly with the Bush regime. Go into politics - you'll be a huge success.

Do you expect her to sing rock music her whole career? Performers like to do different thigns because a(it gets boring if you just stay in one musical category b) they don't want to get stuck in one category.
