This reminds me very much of Tonya Pinkins. Tonya Pinkin (who I think has a wonderful voice) didn't always have the most appealing sound during Caroline, or Change. But she gave an emotional, riveting performance. she didn't rely on riffing and holding notes. that doesn't equal emotion. Yes, Fantine in the past is sung differently and Daphne's voice is indeed raspy and rock. But Daphne is giving us something new. Fantine should not sing I dreamed a dream beautifully anyway.. she's pouring out her damn soul in this song. Maybe Daphne's voice may distract you, but at least she is an actress who makes choices and goes for them and is fearless. It's ok to not like the sound of her voice, but what's important is her subtext and what she is trying to say in the song. This is not miscast, this is an actress who makes the role her own. Daphne always gets great reviews--Rent, Anna in the Tropics and she got the best reviews in Bernarda Alba. BEing different is not a bad thing. I would much rather see Daphne in this role then another actress being the exact same belting Fantine we've become used to.
Yes, Daphne is still in and as far as anyone (including her) knows she will continue to be in.
sundaymorning6am: No one, including Daphne at this point, knows the exact dates she will be out. She told me a month or so ago that I wanted to see her (which I do!) to get tix before February. More recently she said basically the same thing . . . she will be there til the end of January. I guess after reviews we will know if she will be coming back after "Jack Goes Boating" but for now I would say that she will be there until Februaray.
"I wrote a book: "How to Be Popular". Now I've put together a top ten list of how to help you:
-Elphie, everyday... shower. I mean, who knows? Maybe some of that green is gonna come off!
-Deodorant Elphie. No body likes a stinky witch!
-I think we've covered the hair, we'll get to that.
-Clean underclothes. That's all I'm gonna say.
-Look at your posture. That's no way to be popular!
-Bed made, room straightened. We've done that.
-Colors blended. Oookay.
-But the most important thing to have, to make yourself popular, is to keep your beautiful smile."
~Kristin Chenoweth in her last performance of the song "Popular"
I actually enjoyed her performance. I thought her raspy voice worked. After all, the character of Fantine has been through a lot, so would you expect her to sound like an angel?
