I'm not going to say who it was but recently I saw a show and after I went to the stage door. The stage door was not crowded at all. The actor comes out and lights a cigarette and goes down the line. When someone asked for a picture she said yes and gave the cigarette to her security guard. What do you guys think of this. Was the actor wrong ?

No, she wasn't wrong. She shouldn't have to modify her behavior to accommodate autograph-seekers.

I'm curious to know who it was. If it's an actor in a musical they really shouldn't be smoking.

Objectively speaking, only if it was a designated no smoking area. You'd have to check for a visible "no smoking" sign or nearby "no smoking within X feet of this sign" to be sure.
NYS and NYC ban indoor spaces (with a handful exceptions) and public common outdoor spaces (e.g. parks, benches) and also have other "no smoking" rules. Outside of those bans, it is up to the establishment.
Subjectively speaking, seems to be in bad form, it would possibly be better to deny autographs to finish her cigarette.
Scientifically speaking, smoking is bad for her.

She was wrong to ask the security guard to hold the cig. She should've blown a smoke ring in the photo.

Personally, I detest smoking, but what another adult chooses do do with their own body is none of my business.

Jeeze, Louise! I don't smoke any more for my own health reasons, but God save me from the puritanical anti-smoking brigade!
And for the record, glad-handing with a crowd of germ-covered strangers eight times a week may be just as injurious to one's health as smoking.

Michael Shannon lit up after a performance of LONG DAY'S JOURNEY...
I didn't care. He just did an almost 4-hour show and was signing for all of us. He was probably craving one.

Actors are people. Some will smoke, drink, curse, use drugs, sleep around, and all those other things that people sometimes do. If you don't want to see an actor being a real human being, vices and all, then I suggest avoiding the stage door and going on your merry way after the performance is over.

If you're stupid enough to hang around a stage door--that's your right--same as it is for that silly actor[actress] to smoke.
I'm old-fashioned--I like to still differentiate between male & female--I get SO confused, and this trend of calling girls/everyone-- 'guys'--sheesh !
My 98yo Mother and I walked into a restaurant recently to be greeted by 'Hi guys' ! Needless to say after my tongue lashed him to death--we left----and I gave my cigarette to my Mother to calm her down.

I would love to have heard what you said I have problems with today's improperly placed familiarity but would be unable to put my objections into words.
Of one thing i feel pretty certain. No matter how eloquent you were the recipient was befuddled when you left and had no idea what your point was or what your "problem" was.

She was not wrong as long as she disposed of the refuse properly. Unfortunately, I have witnessed many, many smokers simply throwing their burning garbage directly onto the sidewalks of New York (and many other places), and this is unacceptable. It's perhaps my biggest pet peeve, and I've gotten into some verbal scuffles over it.

Actors don't work for you. And when you meet them at the stage door, they're off the clock. That they even stop to sign an autograph or snap a photo is purely a courtesy on their part. You may personally find smoking distasteful, as I do, but it's ridiculous to expect someone who's essentially doing you a favor to act in a manner that you deem appropriate.
