Completely random, but a quick funny story. I was sitting in French class today, and we were donig some work as a class. It was on a medical article we read in a magazine. Anyways, one of the questions was "Quelle est le definition du mot dengue?" I actually started laughing to myself (no one where I live knows much about Broadway, and what they know definately doesn't extend to spelling bee) so I raised my hand, and gave the definition (quickly translated, of course) and said the example to a friend sitting next to me. Needless to say, a few people looked at me like I was insane.
Did you provide the sentence that Jay Reiss gave to Al Sharpton during the Tony's? I'm always co-opting dialogue from that show. The Bee is in my blood...
Liotte, If the sentence used sounded something like this "Stoner Billy convinced his mom that the redness of his eye was due to his xero.......then Jay Reiss did use it on occasion .
Right, it was something like that. I had heard it was used on occasion, I just never heard it. Wonder why they choose to use a sentence on random performances.
I think it depends how long the guest speller segment is running. At the discretion of Panch to retain the improv feel and sometimes to heighten the drama ;sometimes he would just blurt out the impossible xero ... word. The visual of Mitch appearing with arms folded did the trick. No sentence was necessary--Audience erupted with perfect response... Gotta love The Bee.
I agree - I think it's funnier without the sentence, just Panch saying "No" (as in, you can't have a sentence) and seeing Mitch with his arms folded and ready to go- that was good enough.
I was chatting with my friend last night and I found out that he is a friend of Jesse. He said "we worked together in CATS," so I went "what?! Jesse was in CATS??"
No, he was a bartender at the theatre. I thought it was funny to imagine him as one of the cats :)
Home from Bee! I do not like waking up early to go to matinees, I don't how the cast does it every week!
Maurice was great as Chip, especially since it was his second time ever going on. He reminded me a lot of Willis in the role- a bit more reserved than Jose plays him. But I think he will really grow in the role and already has a great start.
Sarah Stiles was also terrific as Logainne. I've only seen her play Olive (which she said she relates to more and likes that role better), but she was wonderful, very cute. She played it just like Sarah Saltzberg, and used her speech from last month about Bush rigging the oscars. Too bad she is leaving in a couple weeks, she was a nice addition to this cast.
