can i just say, though i havent seen it as much as u guys lol, ive only been to NY 2 times, and ive seen it 3 times (and one of the times I got to meet William Finn!! I died). I LOVE this show so incredibly much and I want to see the SF cast so much! This board makes me so incredibly happy!
Just wanted to add my name to the lovers-of-all-things-25APCSB.
I wore my Spelling Bee shirt to class the other day and someone, who obviously wasn't farmiliar with the show, came up and asked me if I won a spelling bee and that's why I was wearing that shirt. lol.
And I just said yes.
And that's my random Spelling Bee story for the day.
"Wickedness is a term invented by society to account for the curious attractivness of others." -Oscar Wilde
To go with the spelling bee shirt story, I was walking to tkts after I saw the matinee in hopes of getting tickets to another show that night, and I was wearing the pin the volunteers get (the finalist in the 25th annual putnam county spelling bee pin) and one of the guys giving out flyers came up to me, asked me to spell a word, and then wished me luck and went on to say that no matter how I do in the spelling bee, I was a winner just for participating. He wished me luck in the spelling bee, asked if it was later that night, and then just dropped the subject.
"That's fun though that people are asking, you can tell them about the show and bring more people to see it!"
I saw it for the first time on Oct. 30, and since on Halloween my friend and I were taking her little brother trick-or-treating, I decided to dress up as Olive. I had a number 11 speller tag, and people were like “An angel…a vampire…a number 11?” so at every house I was like “I’m Olive from the Broadway show Spelling Bee! You should go see it!”
saw the show yesterday OMG-loved it and loved Sarah Stiles as Olive--understudy also my friend who is the true afficionado on the show said that she breathes a whole new life into Olive that would compliment , not rival Celia.. and also spotted William Finn out there yesterday.. Not that I would know him from adam.. any confirms ? that would be cool
My friend Becca talked to Matt Wilson (understudy for Barfee, Coneybear, Panch) in the elevator at the Post Street Theatre. She said he told her that he's going on in a couple weeks. I didn't get a chance to talk to him after the show, but I'll ask this weekend who he's going on as and on what day (for anyone who's interested in seeing Matt go on). I saw him go on as William last month and he was really good (I prefer Jared's Barfee, but I enjoy both versions). I'm hoping that he'll be going on as Leaf or Panch in two weeks though because I haven't seen any understudies do those roles yet.
How did you like Willis, Liotte? As I said before, I felt he just didnt have the power, especially for the I Love You Song. Curious what you think though because of your expertise in the show.
"The hallmark of aristocracy is responsibility. Oh brother, that got me, that did me in!"
I think that Willis has really grown in the role. A lot of the time, he is a bit more reserved, but when he lets go, he can really sing the hell out of the song. I prefer his Mitch Mahoney to his Chip Tolentino, but he did a great job in both roles. I really don't have any complaints on any of the Bee understudies, I've seen them all and they all do a great job.
