I'm glad that 1996 film didn't happen

Because it sounds terrible.
I mean I like The Last Emperor, but the director seemed like the wrong choice, and also it was during the time that live-action movie musicals were not popular with film audiences; did Disney forget their 1992 flop Newsies in an instant when they were thinking about this?
Thank God for Steven Spielberg and his West Side Story coming into existence instead of what I assume could've been a "cool", "rapping", "hip with the youth", and "extreme 90's movie musical". That would've been worse than anything Tom Hooper can come up with in his nightmares.

What would've been even worse would've been Tom Hooper directing West Side Story

How do you know how it sounds? Unless you have a pipeline into the (never reached) future, all you know is Bertolucci/1990s. I feel sorry for anyone who makes that kind of snap judgment. I feel happy that none of your kind produce films (or theatre).
Besides, we didn't need that version in the end, because Baz Luhrmann made the 90's drenched Romeo + Juliet and that movie actually works in it's own way. I actually remember when West Side Story 2021 was first announced, and some people assumed and/or feared that it would be a "modernized remake" that changed the time period and slice/cut the score to ribbons that it wouldn't resemble the original musical anymore like Nine or Annie 2014.
Wow, that was silly.

Great musical. I really liked it. Some wrote that it would be better if filmed on film, but think that everything worked out so effectively. After winning the jackpot with the syndicate casino special code, now I want to visit Hollywood and visit this pavilion.

I hope the film is still able to come out in December

Honestly, I doubt they'll want to wait any longer.

I still see this being released in December regardless of whether movie theaters close or not for a Delta surge. In a worst-case scenario, it will possibly be a December 10 streaming release on Disney+, which is how I'd like to see this one anyway.

Agreed. And knowing Spielberg is passionate about the movie-going experience and his films usually demanding a big screen to watch, this will probably be a "only in theaters" release. Not to mention that this film may be aiming big for awards season.

A new trailer should be out soon
I think September will be the perfect time to launch the theatrical trailer, alongside the official poster. I'm just excited to see behind the scenes footage of the rehearsals and filming the musical numbers.
That's the teaser poster, there should be a theatrical poster coming soon.
Correct.

No thoughts. Some people will look for any reason to cancel. Hopefully Black latinos and latinas were cast in speaking roles and not relegated to background scenes; however, this movie is prone to get cancelled any way on social media because of Ansel, and despite what some posters on here say, it's still being talked about on other platforms. It will only get bigger closer to release date. Unfortunately, that's just how it goes when one allegedly bad apple spoils the bunch.
when you see the word "cancel" in the Post, chuckle and ignore. Something about pot calling the kettle black.
Also note this is an article from last month and I think it was already discussed...
The NY Post has no thoughts about this either since the "writers" who work there are brainless hacks.
They just had another longer trailer during the Olympics on NBC.
OH MY GOD IT LOOKS SO GOOD
