Press Release for ABC TV’s SOMETHING’S COMING: WEST SIDE STORY - A Special Edition of 20/20 airing on Sunday December 5, 2021.
ABC News will present a one-hour primetime edition of 20/20 that goes behind-the-scenes of the upcoming film adaptation of West Side Story and features a new interview with director Steven Spielberg.
What’s Happening:
In this special edition of 20/20, Spielberg reflects on his fascination with the West Side Story original Broadway cast recording growing up and how it helped inspire his filmmaking career, his hesitancy to make a musical until now, the relevance of the movie’s themes in today’s world, and how he’s adapting the iconic musical for the next generation.
Something’s Coming: West Side Story includes interviews with Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, and Ariana DeBose, stars of the upcoming film; Rita Moreno, who opens up about her Oscar-winning role as Anita in the 1961 version and her role in the new film written especially for her; Chita Rivera, who first played the role of Anita on Broadway; Stephen Sondheim, legendary lyricist who wrote the lyrics for the original Broadway musical; Tony-award winning Tony Kushner, who wrote the screenplay; Cindy Tolan, the film’s casting director on selecting rising stars for the iconic roles; and Puerto Rican historians that consulted on the film.
Something’s Coming: West Side Story – A Special Edition of 20/20 airs Sunday, December 5 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m. EST), on ABC.
Global industry and press screenings in NYC, LA, many U.S. cities, Canada, London, and Paris begin November 28. Some screenings in NYC and LA will have Q & A with cast and crew -- https://disneystudiosawards.com/west-side-story/screenings
Also, I read somewhere that Ansel Elgort will be taping an appearance on James Corden on 12/7.

Will it be made available to stream on Hulu later?"
Yes, all of ABC programming becomes available on Hulu the next day, including the Specials.

Very interesting that one of the categories Disney has llisted is Best Actor for Ansel Elgort despite the assault allegations he received last year. I guess it was a good thing this movie got delayed from last year due to the pandemic because the studio is probably hoping they’ve distanced themselves from that accusation.

We'll see if it does. I don’t see this being a huge box office hit. Maybe a modest one at best. Although there are bigger tentpole films opening next month such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Matrix: Resurrections. Of course, we don’t even know what COVID cases will look like by then.

Are they still gonna be able to do that at this point? I imagine that the film has to be completely finished by now.

Universal was able to send a “patched” version of Cats to theaters after the first weekend. Adding a special credit in before the film has even been released will not be a difficult task by any measure, especially one as absolutely important and necessary as this is with the timing of everything.

Though the actual film was shot on celluloid film, it was transferred onto digital format. The movie theatres receive the film and have it on their hard drives. Gone are the days of having to spool and paste together reels and reels of film. Adding this last minute credit takes a few minutes to add to the master digital file. I’m sure they already added it to the film. If movie theatres already have the digital file of WEST SIDE STORY, they’ll be instructed to delete it and replace it with this new one.
Anybody else pick up on the fact that Maria's "by the book" line in her first scene with Tony is a direct callback to one of Juliet's in HER first scene with Romeo? ("You kiss by th'book." Kushner's done his homework, all right...

In addition to the classic songs, the WSS soundtrack out 12/10 will also feature modern tracks inspired by the film, written and performed by today's Latinx artists. This was confirmed by the artist Kali Uchis last weekend at the AMAs red carpet: https://twitter.com/LAUNlCAUPDATES/status/1462580068048261123?s=20
You can currently listen to Kali Uchis and Ozuna's "Another Day in America" (check the cover art; it says "Inspired by Steven Spielberg's West Side Story" on the bottom!): https://youtu.be/cw1qDzyiYW4
It's also expected that Selena Gomez's take on "I Feel Pretty" will be a part of this project (snippets have been circulating on Selena's TikTok and elsewhere since at least October). You can listen to bits here: https://youtu.be/5RnSeqwR5m0
Interesting! I wonder who else is onboard for this project. (Hopefully Bad Bunny.)
Can anyone link the Amazon pre-order? I can't find it! (I often cannot find preorders!)
