Country music superstar Carrie Underwood stars in her acting debut as Maria with True Blood's Stephen Moyer as Captain von Trapp in the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, which will be broadcast nationwide on NBC in a three-hour LIVE broadcast December 3, 2013. The cast also includes Tony Award-winners Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti, and Christian Borle. The CD will be released the day of the broadcast.
One of the most popular stage and film musicals of all time, The Sound of Music is based on the true story of a young novice nun who falls in love with Captain von Trapp and his seven children set against the backdrop of Nazi-occupied Austria. The biggest jewel in the Rodgers and Hammerstein crown, The Sound of Music contains some of the most famous songs ever written: "The Sound of Music," "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Edelweiss."

Yay I'd kill for Audra's climb every mountain
Is Carrie Underwood really a "superstar"?
4 albums, all debuted at #1.
20 million singles, 15 million albums sold.
11 #1 singles.
6 Grammys.
10 Academy Of Country Music Awards.
6 People Choice Awards.
16 Billboard Music Awards.
7 American Music Awards.
Golden Globe nominated.
I think she fits in the "superstar" category.
Actually really excited for this. Can't wait to hear " How can love survive".
And yeah, she is a superstar.
They're calling this her acting debut? Short memories.

It looks like they will be doing "Something Good" which was not in the original Broadway production but was used in the 2006 West End Revival and 2013 London revival. I'm still waiting on casting for Liesl and Rolf.

Yes, she very much is a superstar. And a very well deserved one.

When will people wake up and realize what a self-serving song "Something Good" is? It's a crap song that should never have made it anywhere. They should have stuck with "Ordinary Couple".
Consider the emphasis of the songs:
An ordinary couple is all we'll ever be
For all I want of living is to keep you close to me
For somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good
if they were going to use a song from the film, I would've preferred "I Have Confidence"
"Something Good" isn't a great song, but I think it's better than "An Ordinary Couple". Most live productions of The Sound of Music that I've heard of have used "Something Good".
"Something Good" might not be a wonderful song and I don't think it's QUITE what Maria and the Captain Von Trapp would say to each other, but it's not at all bad-- the tune is lovely. And it's a zillion times better than the putrid "Ordinary Couple."
Even Rodgers and Hammerstein didn't like "An Ordinary Couple" that much. Richard Rodgers said that they wanted to rewrite the song for the Broadway production, but Oscar passed before they could get around to doing it. That is why it is one of the songs that is written for the movie.
No "I Have Confidence?" I figured they would include that to give their star more to sing. I'm glad they're including the "Do-Re-Mi" reprise though. I wish more recordings would include that song.

Looks like this is the most complete Sound of Music recording, besides the exclusion of An Ordinary Couple and I Have Confidence (which doesn't even count since it was written for the film anyway). This includes the reprise of Do Re Mi (which I love) and The Grand Waltz, which a lot of recordings ignore including. I wish I Have Confidence was included in this production though, even if it has to be shortened, like they did for the Broadway revival and the 2006 West End revival.
I'm so excited for this!!
Although the artwork is too busy, at least they included photos of Audra, Christian, and Laura!
Still no word on the kids?

I wonder if they'll use new arrangements, or an amalgmation of past ones.

Here is a link with photos of the nuns recording. I'm excited that Ashley Brown is one of them.

I am confused... maybe i am missing something. Why are they recording if this is supposed to be live?

Because they will release it on audio CD! They always record things prior to live Broadcast. It's for safety and to release the audio CD!
I'm hoping they'll change the title treatment. That logo looks so lazy.
