It’s interesting that people saying she didn’t deserve her Oscar haven’t followed up with who they think should have won that year.

Seriously, look at that lineup. There really isn’t much competition to argue for. The rest of the films and performances nominated were fine but forgettable.

There are people out there who do genuinely prefer Kirsten Dunst in The Power of the Dog. I've also seen some put in a good word for Jessie Buckley in The Lost Daughter.

It's shocking DeBose hasn't gotten back into theater or Broadway. Her career has gone nowhere since WSS. And she was a terrible host of the Tony Awards. Surprised she hasn't tried to play Velma on Broadway or returned to Hamilton.

She was in Baker’s Wife this past season and this thread is about her workshopping a new production of Charity, so clearly she is getting back into theater.

Ariana doesn’t owe you a personality you like. She owes us solid performances. Liking her persona and her being talented enough to deliver a role are two separate things.

There is no "The Bullet" part in Hamilton. She was in the ensemble and made up "The Bullet" because she believes herself to be better than the ensemble.

Oh please with the scolding tone. Part of what makes one a box office draw is having an appealing persona. And having a persona isn't necessarily the same as one's actual personality, anyway.

She may be a much better fit for Aurora than Charity, yet she lacks the terrifying presence that is also needed for parts of the show.

She needs much more experience to tackle more complex roles.

There were rumors persisting DeBose and Schmigadoonco-star Jane Krakowski were going to re-open CHICAGO after the pandemic. Not sure if it was just online gossip, but I know a few people who purchased tickets before the casting announcement in the hopes/anticipation.

Speaking ofSchmigadoon, it's interesting (or typical of the industry) how Ariana DeBose andIsabelle McCalla have their own sort of Chita/Rita relationship, each playing the same roles in Schmigadoon and The Prom. McCalla was a real standout for me in Schmigadoon on Broadway with the "With All of Your Heart" production number being the show's highlight. I know she often gets cast as character's with an edge, but I think I'd be more interested in seeing McCalla play Charity (even though on paper she also reads more as a Nickie).

Someone earlier mentioned the "Oscar curse" regarding winning too young or too soon, and it is especially true for Best Supporting Actress winners. There is usually an attempt to elevate strong supporting players and second bananas to Leading Lady status with usually middling results (look at Catherine Zeta-Jones's string of not great successes after her Chicago win).

Additionally, I think Anita is THE role in West Side Story -I'm not sure any of the other characters/roles have as strong an acting moment as the "drugstore scene.""

It's asinine to think of a curse. Instead, theater producers need to stop their infatuation with anything and anyone who had Hollywood's approval at some point: from adapting films to thinking that any screen performer will ignite the stage by association.

DeBose limited range will only be more evident if they keep giving her any role she's not ready for.

I can't find any indication that DeBose is responsible for the track gaining that name or its notoriety. Ensemble tracks often get informal names based on what they do and in the case of Hamilton, fans are the one that hyped it up as a "secret character" when the pro-shot became available and then DeBose leaned into it because why shouldn't she? She's hardly the only member of that ensemble to try to ride the gravy train."

Might want to watch this interview where she says it was basically all in her head but sure. Ensemble tracks all have nicknames yes, but I don't know of any other broadway performers who go around talking about them as if they were a named roll. She's listed as ensemble in the playbill.

Not sure where you re getting that is was pushed by fans beyond your fantasies but I see you are the one who started the thread now so you are most likely a big fan of hers so I get it. Enjoy the show!
