I am shocked to hear that there is no acknowledgement of race in the musical version given the casting of the two leads. When I saw the press release several months ago I assumed it was a VERY conscious choice to have Andy be Black in this version. Are they seriously just ignoring the enormous elephant in the room with a rich old White lady being the mean boss of a poor young Black girl? Like, race doesn't get discussed AT ALL? I know it's a musical but that is just not realistic in 2022, and yeah, I imagine it makes a lot of the "mean" jokes come across as cruel and racist rather than funny. Yikes.
also something that has been (kinda) bothering me. Please don’t drag me for saying this, but a black woman being treated and spoken to by a white boss the way Maranda Speaks to Andy would not at all fly in 2022. I know it doesn’t/shouldn’t matter but just a thought I’ve had since the casting was announced.
Edit before someone comes for my neck: I get that it’s just a show and doesn’t have to be realistic. Just a thought. Still excited to see it"
The fact that you felt the need to preemptively ask not to be attacked for making an observation on the racial politics and dynamics in this show says more about the racism and toxicity of the message board - and theatre community in general - than any insensitivity on your park. Thank you pointing out what is very disturbing aspect of this already cringe-worthy piece.

True -- and moreso in this case, it's merch. While I personally wouldn't shell out that kind of money for a t-shirt, that's the express function of merchandising and understand why it's sold the way it's sold. We can all wish for better quality, more inventive merch -- but that's not needed for it's function as a souvenir cash-grab. Still, it is nice to have a memento of an evening, even if the evening turns out to be memorable for all the wrong reasons!
Just my opinion: The only Broadway show I can ever think of that had merch that could even kinda be considered fashionable was the West Side Story 2020 revival. And I happily paid out for their $80 hoodie, $45 tote, and $40 shirts. Because they weren’t a white t-shirt that just said a phrase on it on a black t with a goofy logo.
This musical does not represent the fashion world and Beth looks wrong and uncomfortable as Miranda.
We have friends that work for Vogue and Harper's it's a very white-not diverse world and all the girls are pretty, in great shape, dress very stylish and most of the guys are gay, sassy and dress impeccable. I get it that the musical has to now show diversity and acceptance of all. It's all about looks that get your hired it's a very pretentious world. Nobody is frumpy or fat just saying.Where are all the tall-leggy ensemble girls and boys...Calling Stro! The whole musical from the video lacks style, sophistication, nyc-fashion edge and what's with the costumes? Who dresses that way in fashion? This is not the fashion world the movie representated so well! Did they change the period it takes place? Dress your way up is catchy but not feeling it works as a musical from what I just viewed.

This show is screaming to be staged, styled and sound more like American Psycho than some cheap unimaginative Pretty Woman clone. Elton John....really?
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

Is the musical now set in the present? If so, then why does Andy have to be black would solve the problem?

One of the great touches of the film is the simplicity of Miranda's style. She IS fashion, but her own is not over the top; she sticks to business suits and muted tones most of the time. (Not unlike Wintour and Michael Kors and William Ivey Long and others.) Seems like they're trying to go a little broader with Leavel's looks onstage.
