Oh good grief now that is bad! Honestly IMO, this whole thing won't be nearly as bad as the god-awful movie adaptation. NBC can't do anything worst than that. Could they?

I don't think so. this cast is stellar and they have all proven to be damn good singers / actors (with the exception of Shanice and Ne-Yo, whom have never seen in an acting role before).
Gotta love the comments on the video though. "Where are the black people?" "There's no soul in this!" "why didn't y'all just do the Wizard of Oz?"
The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. (thanks ScaryWarhol)
The images I see look more like that children's movie that tanked called "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return." The art direction for this TV "Wiz" certainly seems inspired by it ... which makes so much sense for the concept of the show (an all-black version of The Wizard of Oz).
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."

watching NealB's videos on youtube of this mornings confab - and Kenny Leon says that the new song comes before "You Wanted To Meet The Wizard" (he says "he's the wiz" but I think he confused the songs given the context he then explalins0) to emphasize how Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion are friends. He then boosts the song and says it's "2020 running into 1975 to a place we call now."
This doesn't sound true to the original: Nor is anybody using that phrase in the videos I've watched. They seem much more influenced by the movie and not the stage show. it seems clear that this creative team set out to place their own stamp on The Wiz.
I think it's the set designer referring to the story as "Dorothy's dream" and that is what Kenny Leon decided. But, that's the MGM movie...
So, Dorothy apparently dreams that she's going through Asia - Munchkinland would look like Asia and the cornfields would look like terraced Asian rice fields (except with corn).

"I feel so stupid now. I kept arguing that this would stay true to the original based on what this wiz fan account told me. Now that i have learned about munchkin land based off asia and all the other changes. I owe a few of you guys an apology. I am still looking foward to this. I was very in over my head about how faithful it would be to the original due to my excitement over this. Once again, i am very sorry for annoying you guys
I just got back form the press event. I have posted a few videos & photos on Instagram & YouTube. I will tell you the energry was quite impressive and to hear some behind the scenes stories, fun facts and how the creative team took the best of the movie, the musical and added some touches from the MGM classic, makes me very excited for this!
I was doing all the video, camera work and interviews by myself so it isn't perfect but I tried my best. I will also try to release portions of the network video and transcripts once I get them. For now check out:

"i saw the q&a and here is what i learned: i learned that fatima's choreo will touch upon every street dance out there, shanice cried when she first saw the set, the music is being tweaked every day and it sounds better every day, the producers took their time wit every song to make them fresh and modern while staying respectful to the material, derek mclane said that oz has to be dorothy's dream so he decided to base oz off of asia and europe. kenny leon said that this is like 2020 running into 1975 to create a new now. a total of 6 cirque du soleil acrobats will be part of this. neil and craig are hoping people stand up and notice elijah as the scarecrow
Now I don't necessarily like going for the "it's all a dream..." conceit, but I am intrigued to hear that the design will be influenced by various areas around the world. What we've seen has been so generic, but that has the possibility to be creatively distinct from both the "standard Disney" version and the Afro-centric OBC production.
I am really disappointed by the dream aspect. Why can't she just get whisked away to a strange land and have it be reality? That was one of the better parts about Oz the Great and Powerful; they allowed Oz to be a real place.
The show's choreographer fatima robinson said that every street dance will be incorporated in the choreography. She also says that the choreo is a lot of fun.

Yeah, I think you said almost the exact same thing in post #1062. I am sure the choreography will be very energetic though.
I still wish this was taped instead of being live. The more I hear Shanice Williams sing, the more I feel like she's the weak link. Then again, I think the casting could've been better overall, save for Amber and Stephanie.

People can watch the videos for themselves teddy1996, you don't have to continuously post random bits of information from them. It's most annoying.

But not everyone in this thread can be able to watch the videos so it is neccessary for me to provide information.
