Based on the Amazon series “Transparent” Book by Joey Soloway and MJ Kaufman Music and Lyrics by Faith Soloway Choreography by James Alsop Directed by Tina Landau
From the very first note, this genre-bending new musical comedy follows a trail of family secrets to unearth a story of self-discovery, acceptance, and celebration. A Transparent Musical is the uplifting comic story of the Pfefferman family, whose patriarch is finally allowing their true selves to emerge as Maura, the transgender matriarch she always knew she was. Maura’s ex-wife is left questioning a lifetime of partnership, her oldest daughter unravels her own perfect life, her son runs the other way, and her youngest child begins to discover who they really are. Based on the hit Amazon Prime original TV show by Joey Soloway, A Transparent Musical is the ground-breaking new musical that shines a light on a Los Angeles Jewish family who are universally relatable, imperfectly human, and startlingly familiar.
Also in the season: THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE with Cecily Strong, CLYDE'S, TWILIGHT: LA, and world premiere of FAKE IT UNTIL YOU MAKE IT by Larissa FastHorse.
Meanwhile, the Ahmanson season will be 2:22 A GHOST STORY (a play from London) and the tours of AIN'T TOO PROUD, 1776, and A SOLDIER'S PLAY.
I loved the show initially. Found it relatable and grounded. It veered off the rails rather quickly. Ended up not caring for most of the characters. By the time the musical finale rolled around I wasn’t impressed. I hope someone reigns Soloway in a bit.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
Loved the series. The casting, the family dynamics and the performances - I watched the Musicale finale and appreciated it but it was totally incongruous with the series.
I hope Tina is able to steer Joey and Faith quite a bit.
I was at a Christmas party with someone who had just been to a reading of this and they RAVED about Liz Larsen's performance in the Judith Light role but felt the show itself needed significant work.
Saw the show last week. This isn't going anywhere without major rewrites and refocusing. The book is a mess. This show really needs to be a small, intimate musical about a family (think Fun Home or Falsettos), but instead we get a big message musical that has way too many characters and not enough time to properly develop them and goes on so many wild tangents that by the end you're left wondering who is this musical about? There's a good musical buried underneath this mess, but the show needs to be pared down cast-wise and the libretto needs to be completely rethought. A big disappointment and clearly failing to attract audiences. On Friday, the Taper was only about 25% full.
I saw it a couple weeks ago and agree completely with the above review. There are some excellent performances and songs - but the book has too many many stories going on. It needs A LOT of editing to make it more focused and cohesive.
I wonder if this would play the MTC since I feel like the Taper/MTC sometimes share shows? But if this is going for a commercial run.... it could not even fill the tiny Taper.
A lot of shows announce vague Broadway intentions to keep investors and creative team and theatre owners and ad agencies engaged. Anything can happen and the reception for the CTG production doesn't mean it's DOA, but we should take these intentions with the tiniest grain of salt until they announce dates and a house.
