Taylor Swift singing "Tonight"... — Page 2

Taylor Swift basically did what she could with it. I'm not mad at her. She's just...a very poor singer, so it was doomed to sucking from its very inception. (Gabe Saporta is also a poor singer, but it doesn't matter because he's not earnestly belting a ballad from a Taxi cab. I mean, I'd love to see it, but I don't think it'd come off very well. brb, listening to Hot Mess now.)

Cobra Starship's is very very cool. I'm not the biggest fan of Taylor's, but I still like her in general...
And I think you underestimate how well known West Side Story is. AND I don't think anyone is not going to watch the VMAs because they don't recognize the song Taylor Swift is singing. But now, I honestly might, just to see if they do anymore WSS.

Taylor only sounds good on her cds. Even when she performs her songs live, it's shaky.

muscle: Taylor Swift is a good songwriter. I can't really explain Miley because she doesn't write her own songs and her horrible voice makes me want to scream.

The reason I love live theatre, is the purity of the voices. Even if there is a missed note here and there, you always have the commitment to the live performance and you are hearing a pure voice with all of its inherent unique qualities.
Taylor Swift's version of Tonight is overproduced, badly sung, and there is nothing remotely pleasant about it. Also, the song has been prostituted to MTV with the lyric changes. This will not lure anyone to see a Broadway show. The kids who watch MTV will not go see West Side Story due to that lame promo that doesn't even reference WSS in any way.
I'm really sick of popular singers who sing poorly and cannot hold or sustain a note. There was a reason that all of the country's most popular singers used to come from Broadway-because they could sing and they had the chops to bust their butts for a performance. These kids today are so pampered and such poor performers that they need all kinds of bells and whistles to distract people from the performance.

Not to harp on this, but that computer generated caterwauling as she sticks her head out the window justs chaps my a#@. Is that supposed to pass for holding a note? Not on my planet.

The Cobra Starship/Leighton Meester promo is actually really awesome.
Taylor Swift's is eh, but I'm not a fan of hers.
I'm more happy that the theme of the awards advertising campaign is inexplicably WSS.

I can't stand the new, poorly written lyrics. What's up with the random "don't stop at any red lights" lyric? I know it's saying she wants to get there fast, but it's just too random. The first time watching it, I was too distracted by her annoying voice to notice lyric changes, if that says anything. And to the people saying everybody knows WSS, in Spanish class last year, we watched a very stupid video involving somebody asking people in Mexico for their names, and he had to find four Marias. Of course, he started singing "Maria" when he couldn't find anybody. I was the only person in my whole class who got the reference. Most people I know have heard of very few musicals, and although they probably heard of WSS, a lot of them haven't seen it. My main suggestion for her would be if she has no vibrato, not to hold notes out for longer than they need to be held. I know the last "Tonight" needs to be held out, but if she just shortened the rest of the notes a fraction of a second, it would be much more pleasant. If only the lyricist for the closing song at the Tony's did these, then the lyrics wouldn't be as annoying.

Bettyboy: Haha! I totally agree.
I think she should have sung it softly. Don't try to belt out notes if you can't...

Now this just makes me want Lin-Manuel Miranda to collaborate with Cobra Starship on one of their songs. It's too bad their new CD just came out, it'd be at least 7% awesomer if there was a Lin-Manuel Miranda rap on it. (I keep talking Broadway on forums for Wentz-adjacent bands and now I'm talking Wentz-adjacent bands on forums for Broadway. Mindf%#$.)

I agree the Cobra Starship promo is wonderful. Too bad Lin-Manuel crapped the bed on the re-writes for Taylor Swift. Hers were awful! He got paid for that? Yikes.

I think it's terrific. I'm all for using show tunes anywhere, at any time. Might get some people who'd never heard the song to wonder where it came from. And as for Taylor, God knows I've heard it sung worse.

She did the best she could do with that song. When it comes down to it the song is just to big for her little voice. They should of had her sing something more flattering for her voice. It kinda bothered me that she has no vibrato at all. It wasn't horrible by any means tho. I'm glad they actually took the risk of using show tunes tho!
