Oh wow we’re still talking about this? I had no idea! Anyway, digital Tony awards is a dumb idea. Just show some stock footage or some B roll of all the shows that were closed because of the pandemic at the next, live Tony Awards and call it a day. Add it to “in memoriam” part of the show. Everyone clap, cry, blah blah blah and move on. It sucks for the shows and everyone involved but that’s life. Move on!
Curious if today’s announcement allowing vaccinated people to gather indoors again in large groups will mean the awards get a bigger than planned ceremony now.
I mean they've been doing awards shows during Covid. They could have utilized all the outdoor spaces in NYC and done something similar to the Grammys. But I don't think they know what to do.
The 2019-2020 Tony Awards will be held at the Winter Garden Theatre this September in front of an audience.
The Tony Awards will also host a viewing party, including live entertainment and hosts, for industry members at the Broadway Theatre. A tented after-party will follow, according to the invite.
All guests will need to provide proof of vaccination for entry and both events have set a black tie dress code. The details were sent to Tony voters in invites Wednesday and confirmed by a spokesperson for the Tony Awards.
Details on what will take place in the Winter Garden Theatre remain unclear. The Tony Awards had previously announced that the ceremony will be held Sept. 26, 2021, in a two-part event airing across different CBS platforms.
At 7 p.m. that night, a presentation of awards is scheduled to air on Paramount+. At 9 p.m., CBS is scheduled to air a special featuring performances from the Tony-nominated musicals, as well as a live presentation of the awards for Best Play, Best Revival of a Play and Best Musical.
A spokesperson for the Tony Awards did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the details of the invite.
The Winter Garden Theatre is home to “The Music Man,” which is scheduled to begin performances Dec. 20. The Broadway Theatre was previously home to “West Side Story,” which announced Monday that it will not reopen.
In recent years, the Tony Awards ceremony has been held at Radio City Music Hall. The 2019-2020 Tony Awards were originally scheduled to take place at Radio City Music Hall on June 7, 2020, but the event was postponed by the pandemic.
Due to the pandemic, Tony Award organizers decided to only consider productions in a shortened season, with an eligibility cut-off date of Feb. 19, 2020. Voting for the 18 eligible productions took place in March 2021.
The Tony Awards ceremony has been broadcast on CBS since 1978. This is the first time the event will air on the new subscription service Paramount+.
So the awards will be handed out at the Winter Garden and the Broadway Theater will host a viewing party? Curious where all the performances will happen?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
I’m hoping they get Beanie all set up with a solo vocal performance from FUNNY GIRL that will blow the roof of the Winter Garden…and then have all of this board’s naysayers scrambling for tickets.
I don’t know if it will happen, but it would be so deliciously fitting.
Good luck getting a large part of your audience - older people, to figure this out and subscribe and pay to watch the awards show that’s always free on Channel 2.
And will the Theater Wing have a special 800 Number to help Grandma figure out how to log onto Paramount+ and tell her if she doesn’t want to watch it on her Jitterbug phone that she’ll have to watch it on her computer and then explain SmartTV to her and how to set that up.

Well... That's just unnecessarily insulting. We are the TV generation, after all. We were born, and grew up with OTA TV, and we're here to witness its unfortunate demise.
It's not that we can't "figure this out". Speaking for myself, it's that I choose not to make a [bad] choice to pay for a subscription based on ONE show (or ONE live, OTA network channel for that matter). I've already done the free trial, and it didn't take very long to burn through the limited smattering of content ("thanks!", pandemic) that I found worth watching. Normally, I never watch CBS, save for once a year when the Tonys are broadcast.
If we truly are "a large part" of the viewing audience for the Tonys, then the powers that be may have made a decision that bites them in the patootie, later (who knows?). Since "The awards are a commercial for theater and there’s nothing to advertise right now", I don't see myself paying for a subscription to Paramount+ just to watch the Tonys.
Patience is a virtue. I mean, it's not like that content won't be available the following day (Heaven forbid!! Must.Have.NOW!), or even in real time via alternate (free and legal) Internet sources.
While I'm a little annoyed that Audra will be hosting the Paramount Plus exclusive portion, it makes sense seeing she's a lead on The Good Fight, and also it's the more "prestige" section of the evening.

I'd guess and say all the awards get handed out within an hour and then all performances will be on the CBS Broadway's Back broadcast?

I hope the awards get passed out super fast, one right after another with no speeches (cause everyone is gonna say the same damn thing about Covid-19) because honestly… who cares? Unless Aaron Tveit loses. Then I want everything to slow down!
