Schmigadoon! isn't winning anything until Best Musical so it makes sense they would be first instead of coming out of the blue at the end and then winning the big award. Plus, the fact that you mention Moulin Rouge during the COVID year which doesn't really count as a Tony show is laughable

It's so basic and vanilla, how embarrassing it might win Best Musical. AI slop at its finest.

It's been a noticeable pattern. These were the first Best Musical nominee performances each year I've been watching:
2001: The Full Monty
2002: Mamma Mia!
2003: Movin' Out
2004: Caroline, or Change
2005: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
2006: The Drowsy Chaperone
2007: Curtains
2008: Cry-Baby
2009: Shrek
2010: Million Dollar Quartet
2011: Catch Me If You Can
2012: Newsies
2013: Matilda
2014: After Midnight
2015: Something Rotten!
2016: School of Rock
2017: Come From Away
2018: Mean Girls
2019: Ain't Too Proud
2021: Moulin Rouge!
2022: MJ
2023: New York, New York
2024: Hell's Kitchen
2025: Death Becomes Her

Really feel like they should've done "New Music." The prologue just fell flat in abbreviated form.

I loved Ragtime.
That number was not the right choice imo.

Is it too late to nominate the opening number for Best Musical this season?

I loved this production, but still hate this show. This number made me want to see it one more time.

Schmigadoon and Ragtime were some of the most uninspired performances I’ve seen in while.
I’m here upstairs and the people around me were just like “Meh”
Ragtime made even less of a case for Revival and Direction awards with that.

I was late to the game, but finally saw Titanique today. Would much rather that win or Two Strangers, over this.

John Lithgow’s triumph is complete, having already won the Olivier already against tough competition from Nathan Lane in the acclaimed Death of a Salesman revival.

I don’t know who got ahold of the Tonys but the show looks MUCH better, almost richer. Better graphics, camera shots, stage, etc.

I thought Schmigadoon’s performance was spectacular. I thought them starting outside was so clever and I was so caught off guard when they started performing. I thought it captured the whole vibe of the show.
I agree that the Ragtime performance was meh and they definitely should have gone with New Music or Wheels of a Dream.
Think Pink is a fantastic host and can’t believe she hasn’t been on Broadway yet. Opening Number was great.

So did Ragtime give almost step for step, note for note the same performance the OBC gave 30 years ago? How embarrassing. Why is it close between this and Cats?

Does anyone know why Adrien Brody didn’t say anything about Ragtime? I remembered them always introducing the shows before the performance with a bit about the show (like what Bowen just did for Titanique)
