That's a really good point, Lizzie. I wasn't even thinking of her 'type' in regards to casting, but more of her comfort zone onstage.
This sounds really cruel, especially since I'm no beauty queen, but I also don't think Sutton Foster has the right kind of looks to play Eva Peron. I mean, Patti LuPone's not conventionally beautiful either, but when she was made up the right way, she looked appropriately glamorous. Sutton is pretty, but not in an Evita sort of way.

"Wasn't Sutton in a regional production of Evita? Who did she play then?"
I think it was the mistress (Another Suitcase in Another Hall)

...except for the fact that she's about ten years too old.
Keep in mind that Eva ages in the show from fifteen to thirty-three. Elaine Paige and Patti LuPone were both twenty-nine when they respectively originated the role for a reason.
Orfeh's already begun transitioning to playing character roles like Paulette in LEGALLY BLONDE. In fact, I was rather surprised she didn't book Ursula in THE LITTLE MERMAID after she auditioned to replace Sherie Rene Scott. Something like that with a lot of broad comedy and vocal flexibility is exactly what she's best at.
While she's certainly terrificly talented, she'd never be cast in a role like Eva Peron in New York.

"Sutton is always remembered as the quirky heroine because she hasn't been given any other roles besides those types of characters."
I'm interested in hearing her sing a couple of songs from it, but I cannot see her perform the part. Even if she showed more versatility than just playing a quirky heroine.
There are more appropriate roles for her that are outside of the quirky heroine stereotype.

I kind of like Sutton, but she's completely wrong for Eva.

Anyway, back on topic. Oddly enough, I would like to see Mandy Gonzolez.

ljay, while I agree that Mandy can be pretty bland at times, did you happen to catch her in ELI'S COMIN' some years ago?
She was pretty marvelous in that.

somethingwicked, Orfeh gets called in for MANY auditions because of her talent and her name, they're not at all indicative of the types of roles she intends to play. She was ALSO called in repeatedly to be the final Maureen in RENT, which is a very young role. Also, Orfeh is only 38, and looks younger. She'd be a stunning Eva. She's not "transitioning" into anything. Might I remind you that Madonna was 38 when she made the movie, and didn't look too old at all?
I think Karen Olivo would make an okay Eva, but I couldn't figure out why I didn't think she'd be amazing. Who was it who said she read as too modern? I think that's a good critique, honestly.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

What do so many people have against Sutton? I think that she has a good voice, she is a great actress and dancer and she is very fun to watch on stage. I don't think that she would be the best choice for Eva but God knows she isn't the worst. I also love the idea of Karen!!! What do you guys feel about Kerry Ellis (assuming she gets some well needed acting classes)?
"I also don't think she could pass as a 15 year old."
And Patti did? I know she was 29 but in no way did she look or sound like a 15 year old. I always thought they should have a different actress play the part probaly up until "Good Night and Thank You"
Not saying I am for Sutton Foster playing Eva, I am not.
Didn't I hear somewhere that someone that was talking to Orfeh at the stage door of Blonde suggest that she go into the role of Lady of The Lake in Spamalot and that her reply was that she wasn't going to replace anyone and wanted to just originate roles?
I also think that while Sutton might be a good singer I do think that the role is too high for her. Someone did ask her during the ask a star video on Broadway.com if she would ever consider doing the role of Elphaba and her response is that while she woule love to, vocally speaking, the role is too high for her to sing.

winston89, I don't think Orfeh thinks she's "above" replacing like some posters say, but the simple fact is that she doesn't rely on Broadway to make her living, so she can afford to be choosy about which roles she takes. There's no reason for her to replace someone else, especially in as mediocre of a show as Spamalot, when she can hold out for roles that really showcase her talents.
